Accidental SE Page - 3/19/2007 17:50:47
Everyone wants to attract visits to a client's web site but did you ever do it by "accident"?
I volunteered my time to design and host the USO of Northern Ohio web site. Their original site was done by 4 or 5 volunteers on a when they get to it basis and was hosted on the main USO web site which restricted what could be done. They were convinced to get their own domain and I began meeting with them at the office which is located inside the Cleveland Meps.
While visiting at MEPS, I noticed that parents would be there to see their sons or daughters off for basic training to fight the war on terror. Because the Cleveland MEPS is responsible for a large area, some of the parents needed lodging and meals the night before departure. The old USO site did not have this information so I added lodging and restaurant pages for their convenience.
Examining the site stats, searches for restaurants in the area brought visitors to the site. Most just left after getting the information but some did look around the site and did volunteer or make donations. Upon learning this, I added restaurant pages to Catering and Physical Fitness sites I did. Both of these businesses have had inquiries from visitors locating their site by searching for restaurants in the area.
The "accidental SE pages" were not directly related to what they do but there were no complaints to having the pages on their sites. The USO restaurant page was more extensive with hours of operation and links to web sites. The Catering and Physical Fitness pages were just text with name, address and phone numbers. In fact, it was a simple copy and paste because both businesses are located in the same city. Also, I didn't knock myseld woozy by listing every restaurant in the area.

You know? I went through that with on eof my clients. I honestly didn't do anything and there he was: number 2 in Yahoo and number 3 in Google for three weeks straight.
I broke my head trying to find out what it was I did and haven't found out yet!
