Mike54 -> Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/23/2007 15:46:17)

There's no sense in getting a bunch of content in there unless things work the way they're supposed to. [;)] Figured I'd let you guys kick the tire, bumpers, whatever and let me know what falls off...

Go ahead jaybee, tear it up.

Small problem, I'm not sure what it is I'm doing (I think it has to do with copying and pasting) but every once and awhile this > xmlns:v="urn:shema-microsoft-com:vlm" xmlns:0=urn:shema-microsoft-com:office:office" gets dropped into the doc type statement. [sm=ask.gif]
The biggest problem though is the album.dwt redoing the path to some of my links (to the lightbox stuff) if I make some changes to the dwt and update related pages. No big deal with the one test album but if I have 10 albums linked to it it's going to be a pain.

Here's the link. [8|]

Tailslide -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/23/2007 16:11:15)

I like it!

I'd add in a focus and active rule to your link rules like this:

#navigation a:focus, #navigation a:hover, #navigation a:active{
	border: 1px solid #456;
	background-color: #456;

That gives you the same effect when tabbing round the page.

You've got a few style rules in your document head - I'd move them into your stylesheet otherwise you'll make it difficult to keep track of rule conflicts and make it harder to change stuff.

You know, if I were you with such a pretty grey site, I'd grayscale the W3C icon thingy (actually I'd just leave it out completely but that's me!) or use a prettier version from somewhere like this: http://gtmcknight.com/buttons/validated.php

markhawker -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/23/2007 16:14:38)

It's a tad, grey. I think the logo could do with a bit of spicing up and the background could be a bit more exciting! You could maybe shift the valid xhtml button into the bottom panel, or just have it as a text link. At the minute that's the only thing that actually jumps out at me.

From a coding perspective, there's a lot of styles hard-coded into the HTML which could be stored externally which may become hard to manage.

It's not too bad, just not too inspiring either.

Mike54 -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/23/2007 16:21:56)

Thanks Tail, all suggestions will be taken into consideration (at least they will when I know what they mean [:D]). As for the validation logo, I think I could go for something a bit smaller and more subtle, only those that visit from here would have a clue anyway. Thanks for the link.

The original was even more so but that was kind of the idea, I'm not a bright and flashy kind of guy. The intent is that although the site may be something less than inspiring on the surface ;) they get hit with inspiration when they view the galleries. Perhaps that idea needs to be re-thunk.[8|]

I'm afraid that may be the wysiwyg aspect of my process. You'll notice that they're different on each page. I guess when EW lets you play visually it slips things in when you're not looking.[:'(]

Moi? Now would I do such a thing. [&o]

It's very nice.

As for the weird header thing appearing, Yup I had it happen once when I let EW put something in the page by itself. I didn't make that mistake again and now I can't remember what it was.

I also set all the css stuff to manual.

womble -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/23/2007 18:29:43)

Wombley likey! I'm into quietly understated and stylish at the moment though (luckily, as I have a client at the mo whose colour scheme is 'black' - challenging...[:D])

My only comment would be that that house on the cliff in colour seems a little incongruous in the midst of all the grey, and I'm wondering if perhaps either that photo needs to be greyscale too, or whether perhaps the 'FarslowFotos' heading needs to be a bright primary colour to balance it up more. Maybe that's me beginning too picky though.

Overall very lovely indeed, and I definitely think the grey works - like you said, you need something quite plain to display the galleries to their full effect.

rubyaim -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/23/2007 18:35:18)

I think the grey is fantastic on this site, and I'm not really a grey person.

Didn't go poking around under the hood, but from the outside I think it's on the way to being a work of art [:)]

I'd ditch the W3C thingy though, or make it greyscale as Tail suggested, or just have it on one page if suitable. Works of art don't need bumper stickers [;)]

I have the same image a day later in deep fog, ain't no color there. I'll see how it looks.

womble -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 5:06:45)

That would make a terrific sig line Sally.

jaybee -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 6:31:37)

At the risk of being accused of tearing it down, I actually agree with Wombly, put the name up the top in a colour to balance the colour pics. I did think that when I first looked at the page and then dismissed it but she's right, it'd work.

Take a main colour from whatever pic you have in the content and use that.

Mike54 -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 6:41:09)

I wouldn't have put it up here if I wasn't looking for honest feedback jaybee.[;)] As soon as I get the chance I'll try incorporating some of the suggestions I've had already.[:D]

caz -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 6:45:39)

Sally's right, the art is the thing- not the picture frame or the wall it's hung on, they are just there to allow the photos to do their thing and not intrude.
So I disagree with jaybee and womble, ( Well, there has to be a first time, doesn't there [;)] ) no more colour. The grey is perfect as it is, although I would ditch the W3C logo too.

jaybee -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 6:50:53)

On the gallery pages I'd agree but I think the homepage needs to highlight his branding as well as the pics so I'd do it on the main page only.

The w3c logo absolutely needs to go. Put text links in your footer. XHTML Valid | CSS valid

womble -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 12:26:27)

/agrees with Jaybee

jaybee -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 12:29:59)

Cheque is in the post. [;)]

Mike54 -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 13:15:06)

Some changes made... here

You'll need to refresh to see the changes, hopefully I didn't go to far.[8|]

Oh, if you don't mind look at the monochrome gallery and let me know if the slides are too large in your opinion.

TIA

womble -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 17:17:26)

Wow! They're good Mike! [sm=bowdown.gif]

...home page looks good too. I think that tiny bit of colour in the title makes all the difference. [:)]

jaybee -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 17:46:53)

Superb!

[sm=bowdown.gif]

Mike54 -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 18:08:38)

Let's not get carried away you two [:)], I just wanted to make sure I had addressed the issues.

Barring any further surprises I guess I can begin work on the site...[:D]

caz -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 18:09:21)

Yes, that slight touch of colour is excellent.
/OK they were right [:D] /

womble -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 18:55:02)

@ Caz

Btw Mike.....nice pics! [sm=bowdown.gif]

jurgen -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 18:59:16)

Hey Mike..... how the heck are you doing the "pop-up" flash presentions..... ????

I want it badly for my site..... :-) !!!!!!!!!

jaybee -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 19:12:47)

It's not flash Jurgen, do pay attention. We've mentioned it all over the place. Sigh, men. [:D]

It's Lightbox 2 and you can get the code here.

Ok, ok.... I do pay attention.... most of the time....
Yeap, it's a script.... well, i try to stay away from it. But i have to admit it sure looks great. Hmmmmm.... now you made me think...... [8|]

Mike54 -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 19:49:52)

In this case it is lightbox2 but it's been incorporated into a JAlbum skin and it's super easy to mod into a site. (It had to be or I wouldn'a done it. [8|])

I must offer jaybee special thanks for continually bringing lightbox into the picture (you may note that whenever she did I brought JAlbum up [;)]) as otherwise I wouldn't have known about it...

jurgen -> RE: Not quite ready for prime time but... (3/24/2007 20:31:07)

I certainly do like JAlbum. Somehow i did not get it integrated into my site. but I sure like the picture "presentation" you have going on in your page.....

Hi HO, Hi Ho, and off to work I go..... [8|]
