Dreamweaver CS3 - 3/28/2007 11:10:05
Some significant updates realting to Spry, Ajax and even better CSS tools. Looks good to me (but it is the demo :o)

Ajax, Spry Widget, and the Browser Compatibility features are AWESOME. Although CS3 provides support for editing Ajax, it only shows examples of the Spry Ajax scripts, so it might not be able to fully edit a script that is custom coded.

You can select HTML, and turn inline CSS into an actual CSS file, and then it will apply the correct style to the HTML using a class in the CSS file.

CS3 allows you to see what your website would look like on a mobile phone too (device central).

Here's a quick flash movie about the feature list

I'm pretty sure I will be upgrading.

Of all the major ADOBE CS3 releases, Dreamweaver seems to be the only one that didn't get scheduled for an UPGRADE.

However DW8 did get a bit of an UPDATE in its; already existing CCS support as well as the inclusion of the already existing spry framework (with a few demo scripts thrown in).

They have also thrown in a handful of (more) templates.

Did they add in what customers actually pleaded for for the last x-month/years? :) Did they put in a better FTP experience? (not that I've read), did they greatly improve team/versioning support (not that I'm aware of), did they improve the (amost web standard) PHP experience? (not likely while adobe CF hangs on), did they improve the IDE inteface? (nope, not one bit! :)

You would seriously have to consider upgrading to many CS3 apps, but not Dreamweaver CS3 which only got minor dot point updates and really shouldnt even be in the bundles - it's a bit of an embarrasment to Adobe and a serious slap in the face to the orphaned GoLive developers to see this lack of an upgrade.

If Adobe can't roll out a new version of DW CS3 that looks like it is really a part of the CS3 bundle (new interface) before the end of the year, then I think dreamweaver is DEAD! (The web dev IDE market is way to competetive)

Alternatively, if they can deliver this, for next to no-charge to those who get the bundles (that include DW) then I think that DW will live on and prosper for a few more years (depending on how serious MS (and many others) and Open Source offerings improve).

There are a ton of things Adobe could improve/add, but if you take a look at the new feature list, you'll see there is quite a bit added already.

The new CS3 isn't for everyone. People who don't care about standards or ajax, won't get much benefit from CS3 at all.

I use FP, but didn't upgrade to EW. I didn't see the benefit, even though it is a MAJOR upgrade for thousands of other people.

- What would be replacing it?

Do I have to name names? :) In respect to PHP there are a multitude of good quility IDEs.

You disagree? :)

Beleive me, I love DW, but I'm dissapointed with what I've SEEN of this one so far, maybe there are things they haven't revealed yet (I can hope :)

I'm overall happy with it. I'd like to have seen ASP.NET 2.0 support. But thats understandable. I think the validation controls are a dramatic upgrade.

- As far as what will replace it? Yeah, because I've only used DW/FP/UltraEdit/TextPad... None of them come close to the level of integration DW includes (in terms of working on a complete site).

- Maybe Adobe is waiting to see how the EW handles ASP .NET before they decide what to add. Hopefully they will do something though. DW has dominated the PHP market for years, it would be great to see equal support for asp .net.

Thanks!

According to the lady I just spoke with at Adobe you can upgrade the educational versions at the same price you upgrade the Pro version for. I haven't tried it yet but at this moment they are running a deal where you can upgrade to the CS3 suite for $340.
