srose24 -> Fully editable calendar for EW??? (3/28/2007 20:40:02)

Ok. So I've made the switch from FP to EW and I am catching on fairly well. Some things I like better on FP, but then some things I like better on EW. Figured I better stick with the new and deal with it... Anyway, on to my question...

With the website I am making, I am trying to create a "Calendar of Events" which will show certain events coming up, or birthdays, annivs., etc. I would like to have it resemble Outlook in that it has recurring events. I know I can import it from Outlook, but I am trying to use something that I can "insert" in my own web design so it "flows" with the rest of my site. I have done several google searches and not found anything yet. Also, I am not really wanting a "generator" since that means I would have to regenerate the calendar with every change made to it. Basically, I would like something I can insert into my existing web page, that I can edit from within EW, and has recurring events... I'm sure I know this probably isn't possible so let's just go ahead and throw in world peace... Just thought it'd be worth checking with the pros on and maybe getting some good suggestions.[:)]

Thanks, and sorry for the above book...[&:]

Sounds like you'll need one that's database powered. There's various ones out there, a google search for something like "web calendar" should turn up a variety. I found one recently on SourceForge called WebCalendar which looks okay and can be integrated with sites.

Not sure about recurring events though. Things like the WebCalendar one can be edited via a login through your page, but not through EW - that type of thing's not just a plugin that plugs in to EW. You need to be live on a server with a database. There may be something that uses a flat file, but again, you're talking a server-side language, and it's not something you can just "drop into" EW, you'd need to know a little about the code to set it up.

Hmmm... Sounds like I need to try to do some database learning... Is it very tricky, do I need to know code, or can I do it from within EW?

I will look into the WebCalendar you mentioned also, but sounds like a database may be my best option...

Thanks for the help!!

Yes it's very tricky. Only rocket scientists, Womble and myself can do it. [:D]

The pacakges out there are designed to be reasonably easy to install. Good ones will even do most of it for you. Check the documentation to make sure you understand it. Usually all you need to do is log onto your host, set up a database, upload the unzipped code files and then run an install program which creates all the database tables for you. Then you need to apply a template or tweak stuff in the admin panel.

Make sure you get the right one for your host though. It's no good trying to run an ASP calendar on a Unix host.

Sounds a little more tricky than I was hoping...[8|] May have to just make an excel "month calendar" and copy and paste over...

Thanks for the help anyway.

Scott, it's worth trying [:)]

In the meantime you may want to look at some of the free calendars around - you might be able to use one of them while you are playing around with installing your own.

Calendars Net (see the Brown Bear freebie also).
