Which is the best antivirus software? There are major players in the antivirus segment like norton, CA, Mcafee, Kaspersky., etc. But what according to you is the best one?

Best AV I would say Sophos but it's far too expensive for mere mortals like me so I use what I consider to be next best which is Bit Defender Pro.

Norton and McAfee I won't touch with a bargepole after bad experiences with both.

If you need a free one then AVG is a good option.

I used to use Bit Defender, but had major hassles with it hogging system resources, and as their tech support never got back to me about the query I had with one particular file and process hogging stuff, I threw my dummy out the pram and switched to NOD32 which is lovely and unobtrusive and gets on with it's stuff without bothering you too much.

Ages back there was a problem that did that but it wasn't BD, it was Ad-Aware trying to block some BD files. I removed that and it was fine.

They were just a small family concern but the whole thing has taken off, some big companies are recommending them, Dabs for example. They now have live support and all sorts. Bit Def 10 is just out.

What I like about it is you pay for one home licence and can use it on 4 machines.

I use Nod32 also and am very happy with it.

The best AV is one that will protect your computer from the most amount of viruses/trojans, while still keeping your system at decent speeds. Kaspersky has the best detection rates in just about EVERY test. It is quick, doesn't hog resources, and is very stable.

There are many programs that are good enough to make people feel safe, but Kaspersky is still #1.

If you can't afford Kaspersky, the next best AV is AOL Active Virus Shield - this one is free.

I use NOD32 as well.

Hardly surprising when you consider you can never remove it from your machine without a complete rebuild. I don't care how good it is I would never install it.

- I've only used it on two computers, only uninstalled it on one - it went fine. We're talking about the AV only, NOT the AOL online software bundle crap pack.

Yep, it uninstalls but it leaves hooks all over the place, much like Norton does. We drove ourselves nuts trying to get rid of it. Every time we thought we had there was something left behind that put all the other bits back again. In the end I was soo hacked off I just hit the format c: option. That got it.

Ohh the sense of satisfaction! [:D]
