Getting Expression Web to ask for site's username and p... - 4/13/2007 15:31:29
Hi all! First post here!

My client has given me the task of establishing their web site on their server. Their server is running Windows Server 2003 64 bit. I am using Expression Web, but I have no idea how to set things up (either in Windows Server 2003 or EW) so that it asks for a username and password so I have write permissions so that I can "publish" the web site.

Details:
I have over 20 years programming experience and write in all the latest IDE's, including VB.NET. I am also very experienced at using FrontPage to design and maintain my own web site (hosted by someone else).

My client has already installed and configured Windows Server 2003 (64bit Standard Edition) on their server, and I can access anything I need (as Administrator) using Remote Desktop.

I have installed Expression Web on my machine, and I've set it to use WebDAV, since the Server 2003 doesn't have the FP extensions installed.

I bought 3 books for Server 2003, including the big Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Administrator's Companion, but I simply can not find anything that tells me how to set it up so that EW asks me for a username/pw so that I can login to the server and actually store the web pages that I create (ie write access allowed).

When I try to save the pages in EW, I get error 403.3 - Forbidden: Write access is denied. I can't find anywhere in EW to configure a login when accessing a particular web site. Does this need to be done in Server 2003 on the server, and if so, how is it done?

I have never been a network administrator, but I do understand and comprehend all of the lingo, and can certainly learn anything in the books, but I can't understand why no one (in these books) talks about setting up the login for web designers on the server?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

This should help.

I am a newbie but had a somewhat similar situation to what you describe. My client purchased a domain name and hosting right with one of the Internet big names. He hired me to develop his website. He gave me the username and password to login into the host server. Once inside the control panel of the host, I created an account with my own username and password for the website I will develop. I came back to EW and worked on the website. When I was ready to publish, I had the option of Frontpage Extension host or FTP. I choose FP extension host and published without problem.

EW will check after you have correctly put in the username and password you created in the host server to see if there is a valid account there. Once it validates the account, it will publish. I have very little experience with intranet hosts but am I naive in believing that the system will be similar?

Thanks!

Looks pretty extensive. I've printed the PDF for the lab. Interesting that it implies using VS 2005, VB.NET using ASP.NET 2.0 just to create a login, but I'll give it a try!

Thanks again.

I just really seem to be going round and round with this.

I've tried the lab (suggested per the link above), and I understand that I need to create an ASP.NET web app for the login, but I keep running into the same problems (is it really this difficult?).

First, the lab has you using VS 2005, and tells you to Open Web Site. You add a new item called Login.aspx. Then you make some modifications to it such as adding a Login control and a CreateUserWizard control. OK, fine...but, first, you're working on their server, not on the one you need to be working on, which is OK for the Lab purposes. But then trying to apply it to your server...well here's my issues:

1) The Windows Server 2003 that I'm accessing doesn't have VS 2005 installed.
2) I have VS 2005 on my development machine, but when I try to open the web site, such as http://abc.com, I get the dreaded "...appears that the FrontPage extensions are not installed"!

"To use FrontPage Extensions, or not to use FrontPage extensions...that really is the question!"

I just keep going round and round. Could someone PLEASE walk me through the steps of setting up my web server (via remote desktop, since it's 1500 miles away) so that I can simply design my client's web site using Expression Web???

I have:
VS 2005 Pro
Expression Web
FrontPage 2002
...and much more. For books, I have Windows Server 2003 Admin Companion (1400+ pages), Windows Server 2003 A Beginner's Guide, Windows Server 2003 For Dummies, and Using Microsoft Expression Web

Thanks!
