You can install a Vista upgrade from XP version, without actually having to have an existing copy of XP!

Basically, you install the Vista Upgrade from XP onto your computer as a 30 day trial. Then you re-install it, and point to the current install as the previous XP install.

Microsoft is so smart :)

What is kind of interesting is that MS makes more from upgrades than it does from the full product. http://www.microsoft-watch.com/content/corporate/how_much_does_microsoft_make_from_office_2007_and_vista.html

Her observations about the Office consumer market is sensible. "Consumers tend to not pay for most copies of Office, but instead bring it home from the office, purchase lower-priced academic versions, or purchase one copy for many machines. While Office is widely used by consumers, it is not widely paid for."

- I wonder if it has anytthing to do with this...

Hi Bobby

What you have posted is being argued about on a large number of message boards as to legality etc. etc.

One interesting point made is that Vista communicates with MS in a similar manner as xp. MS are allegedly able to identify the type of installation installed on the machine by means of the product key used. Therefore they can identify if a previous legit os as described in the EULA was installed prior to the upgrade. If they don't then the machine is reverted back to a trial version. If this is true then it is possible that using the upgrade version as described could fall flat on its face in the not too distant future. Only time will tell.
