purple predicament - 4/20/2007 9:33:08
First, Thanks everyone for your help. I have not taken any of your critique lightly and have referred several friends and associates to this site. - Jaybee - I completely changed the font in the site and added the hovering behaviors on the navs as you suggested last week. I have purchased six computers in the last two months and was in the process of conforming all of them to a standard agency look and feel (same desk top configuration, same screen saver, favorites, passwords, etc...) I pulled the website up on all six and noticed that the background color looks completely different on some of them. Blue on the windows XP Blue on the windows vista business premium laptops and Purple on the windows vista home basic Please give me some input. Is there a general rule of thumb for picking a background color? Should I use a picture instead of relying on FP colors? Does a dark color BG focus your attention to the lighter center of the site or is a light color (or white BG) better? Either way I obviously like the color blue but am not against removing it to get rid of a potential purple. Thanks for your knowledge in advance.

The background doesn't look blue on my XP Pro machine, it's more to the purple side.
Are the monitors for all these machine the same? How about the video card? Also have you taken any time to ensure monitor calibration?
Shades and color tone may be different on different monitors depending on settings. In a closed environment you can adjust the settings to closely resemble each other but out in the world there will be people who just won't see it the same.:)

For example I don't think I want to know how my images look to jaybee on her new monitor...:)

It's really really annoying but I don't think that there's a lot you can do about it (I could be wrong).

I visited a client the other week and I'd just done a site for her in a pretty soft green. On her monitor it came across as a boring muddy beige - she'd changed the monitor calibration to suit herself.

Don't think it matters whether you use images or "HTML" colours.

It depends on loads of different settings, hardware, calibrations. HP calibrations are different to Dell and so on.

I have a logo I did in neon pinks and purples with a white backlight. Looks great on most machines but on some it's a sort of Barbie pink splat.

Mike I now have my heart in my mouth every time I load a site I've done as this monitor really tells it like it is. :) I'm seriously thinking of running 2 monitors, this one and the old one for reassurance.

I hope you pointed out that she'd be seeing nothing in the way it was intended and if she was buying anything, what arrived would look completely different.

I did. She seemed happy enough anyway (I got a cheque out of her at least!).

Thanks for the feedback. I will probably change it anyway. Maybe a dull grey or even an off white. It really is a shame I liked the earth tone bluish color that I origionally picked out. Heck I my even go for a dark blue that seems to be consistant on all monitors. Thanks again. If anyone wants to look at the site again and throw there suggestions in. I'm all ears (and eyes) Anything that I might be missing?
