Web Hosting - 4/21/2007 3:51:03
It's been a long time since I've posted but I come here and browse for answers when I have questions. Thank you OutFront for always being there!

I'm still using FP2000 and thought it might be time to upgrade to Expression Web.

Question: Do I need to check with my hosting company to see if they support Expression web and if so any special questions I need to ask. Is it safe to assume that if they are now hosing FP they will be able to host EW?

Thanks,

:) Even Microsoft are hosing FP.

No, it's not safe to assume that. It purely depends on what the site contains. It was possible to run a FP site on a host without FPSEs running as long as you didn't use any FP features that need FPSEs. Same with EW.

EW will work happily on any server whether it previously supported FP or not, however, if you're intending using any of the features that require ASP or .net then you'll need to be on a Windows host.

For a straightforward site you should be fine. Unix host you'll have to use FTP to upload your site not sharepoint.

Thanks Jaybee. That is about what I thought. At this time my hosting company does not offer windows servers on shared hosting, only dedicated. That will be coming in the future.

For now I just have two small sites and I've never really utilized the bots in FP much. I don't mind FTP to publish but I'm wondering about forms and I'm also confused from cruising the forum about how or if EW works with php.

I guess the dwon and dirty is.....without asp is there any reason to update at this time?

Thanks,

Forms - don't use the Microsoft ones. They are insecure and an invitation for spam.

As you have php take advantage of the one here.

EW and PHP are not friends. If you are working on a php script then do so in UniRed text editor. It's free and you can save the file as UTF-8 without the BOM. There is no difference here than editing in EW except for the BOM issue which EW insists on adding, wrongly.

EW is worth upgrading to if you want to develop futureproof sites using divs and css instead of tables and you are happy to stay away from the FP specials such as shared borders (use includes instead), forms, counters and so on.

Jaybee,
Thanks for the help. I'll give the form you sent a try. All of the other FP goodies like shared boarders I don't use. They drive me crazy. Do use lots of include pages though.

It's been a while since I did much with web design so I need to remember what I use to know.......As usual, Outfront and and the great folks who hang out here came to the rescue.

Thanks again,
