Any Mac or Linux users want to took at my site? - 4/30/2007 20:13:45
Here it is. gentledoberman.com I’m particularly concerned about the space between the menu bar and dropdown menus.

Well I'm not on the Mac at the moment but a general problem is

The Doberman Pinscher is a very beautify,

shouldn't that be beautiful?

I'll check on the Mac later. Any particular browser?

Friend of mine had a Dobie. Ruby. Trained as an attack/guard dog. Be careful he said, she'll have your hand off. So I spoke to her, put my hand out for her to sniff and she fell over on my feet so I could tickle her tummy. :)

Thanks for the type-o. That’s been there a while! I’m about to redo the home page to reflect the new direction of the site.

Thanks for checking. I guess the main browser I am concerned with is Safari. Does ie on mac display differently for ie on windows? I’d like it checked there too.

Dobermans are pretty cool dogs. With a trained properly tempered Doberman you have to work hard to make it hurt you though. We have three. We haven’t trained them specifically for protection but with the Doberman it’s not necessary. Our male, Drayko, has protected my wife twice for attackers, both without having to deliver a bite.

The first time he just put up a Doberman barrier until the police came. The other time he gave a fellow two paws on the chest and knocked him down.

Right, IE Mac hasn't been available for download since Jan 2006 and hasn't been supported since Dec 2005. It was pretty useless and anyone still running it is probably a masochist. To be honest I wouldn't worry about it.

The site renders fine in Mac Firefox, Camino and Safari. The only issue is the gap between the nav bar and the dropdowns which is wider in FF and Camino than it is in Safari. It doesn't look too bad though and it still functions. I'd not stress about it.

Ahhh actually it doesn't function as you can't get to the dropdown items before they collapse again.

It's to do with the way it's been built in separate blocks from the main nav. I removed some of the css, specifically the position absolute -500px positioning and it made no difference which kind of indicates that there's something not right with the method. I'd suggest looking for an alternative menu. There are loads around on the web.

That was exactly my fear. Opera on Win has a gap there two but I fix it with an if statement in the JavaScript and likewise a negative gap on ie.

I originally had a 100% css menu, meaning 100% css plus a JavaScript for ie. I decided to convert to what I feel is a more robust and simple JavaScript menu.

Removing the absolute -500 should only effect things until you hover over the menu and fire the script which repositions everything.

Would you be so kind in giving me a strong estimate as to the pixel length of the gap you refer to in each browser? I would also be mighty grateful for the navigator.appName output for each browser.

Do you know why these browsers are positioning differently?

Has anyone used the Son of SuckerFish menu. Apparently, they work on ie, ff, and opera. I'm wondering how they work on Macs.

Regardless, SuckerFish is more simple than my monstrosity.

Hi - I've used SOS and it's fine.

There is, however a new and improved more accessible version which you can find here: http://carroll.org.uk/sandbox/suckerfish/bones2.html

No I explained badly, it was 1 am here and I should have been asleep. :) Leave the absolute, remove the -500. It all worked fine, including firing the js.

In safari the top of the dropdown sits on the border of the box below. In the others it's about an eighth of an inch below that.

Go with suckerfish.

Hey, It even looks good in Netscape. I know I am the last one living still using it.

Tailslide, that menu is hard core.

How does it work on Mac. It seems that it would work well, having focused so much on accessibility. Would be odd if it didn't.

Fine far as I know. I'll double-check later on but if I don't post back again then it's fine.

There may well be issues with IE5.2 (mac) but then there's issues with everything with that browser!

Yeah, I’ve officially given up on the ancient user agents. My own log files don’t even show them anymore and by the time someone want’s to pay me enough to build a site compatible with these vintage browsers they will be even more outdated. The only situation I could see is a company that does a lot of work for developing nations. In that case I would just stick to simple non-interactive stuff anyway.

My learning time would better be spent on accessibility and new technology than dragging these silly people along.

I have another Mac question. Do you fellows on Mac often come across to-it-yourselfer and small time sites that look funky on your system?

I use the mac for surfing rather than working (apart from testing stuff) so I don't tend to visit a lot of small sites. I tend to find that most stuff looks ok on the mac but I do come across stuff that won't work - usually forms or javascript stuff. But then I find that on FF PC too!

(I've checked the accessible SoS and it's fine on the Mac - camino, safari, opera)

I surf using Firefox on the Mac, Camino is Firefox based, so if sites work in FF on the PC then they're fine.

Not so certain is Safari and a lot of sites go belly up in that. Unfortunately many Mac users have that as their browser of choice so you have to take it into account.

I installed IE Mac for a laugh and ended up in tears.

Safari has particular JS and Flash "issues" which can be a real pain.

I’ve just implemented the Blowfish menu. It looks ok an all of my PC browsers, not quite the same but reasonable.

Anyone see anything catastrophic?

Several years ago I needed a user name for something. I had a picture of my wife leaning on her late horse Buddy. Buddy looked like he was eating weeds, and probably was, so I came up with it in an odd spelling.

Eventually, this humble name made its way to all of my non-critical user name submissions. I like it because I never have had to deviate from it. No numbers or anything.

So, I guess it means horse that is eating some weeds. Or you could say Horse Eating Weeds. Eating being the middle name…..
