Help!!! - 5/4/2007 18:32:12
My computer rolled over and died... The hard drive crashed and it is starting to look as if there is no cheap way to do data recovery on it except for shelling out thousands (with no guarantee of success). I did no backup whatsoever on my two web sites. One site is pretty easy to recreate although it would still take plenty of effort. The second site has over 400 pages and it has several hundred clip art, photos, etc... Plus, it was a template that I purchased and I really liked using it and I have spent so many hours tweaking it. I just bought a brand new hard drive and I am slowly reloading my programs on it including Front Page. My question is that is there any quick and easy way to download everything that I have published on my host server. I noticed that whenever I publish with Front Page, there are two windows. One window for the stuff that I am uploading to the server and the second window has what is already on my host server. Is there any way to bring download what is on my host server to a usable format in Front Page. I guess I have two questions in that is this even possible that I could download it and it would be just like what was on my hard drive before it crashed? If not, is it still possible to download it but that most of the stuff is still in a usable format??? Any comments or opinions would be greatly appreciated... I am still in shock over this because I have spent so much time tweaking my web site to the point that I really liked what I had developed...

Use an FTP client.

ORIGINAL: coreybryant Publishing from Server to Local Computer might help you out some as well. How do I do that. I am going to reload Front Page into my new hard drive this weekend. Since I have no files, where do I go in FrontPage and what do I do to publish from the server to the local computer. I don't know how to do that.

Sorry... My mistake... I went to your link. I do have FrontPage 2002 and I will try those instructions. I will see how that turns out... And when I do this, will it download what is on the server to make it looke like what I had on my hard drive before it crashed???

Yes it should - you can basically publish the site anywhere you would like - including your computer since you have FPSE installed on the server. And you can do this for both of your sites - without the need to recreate anything.

I have to admit that it sounds like it is too good to be true but I will try it as soon as I get all my programs reloaded onto the new hard drive. That will be a huge lifesaver because I don't remember half of the tweaks that I put into it. I will let you know how it turns out.

Your pages are basically saved and stored on your host's computer. Just like you are uploading (publishing) your pages you can download to your own computer. You can use many tools to do the up or download.

Jurgen is correct - you can use a lot of tools, but if you rely on any of the Frontpage components, it is best to use Frontpage to publish. It is very simple to use to publish it from the server to the computer. Frontpage 2003 even made it easier by showing both panes.

For the last few years, every time I thought I was going to get the big chorizo, you guys always always come up with some kind of tweak or work-around. This place has pulled my chestnuts out of the fire time after time. Well, your suggestion worked like a charm. In fact, I was amazed at how it looks just like what I had been developing for years. I know that it is one and the same files that I have been publishing but I just figured that something would have gone wrong. The only thing I had to do was to delete the index.htm and then my original index.htm took its place. When I created that empty web site, Frontpage created an index.htm by default. After that, what I now have on my local computer looks exactly like what I had lost on my crashed hard drive. I did my little site first and now I will try the same thing on my big site. Thanks for your tips and ideas...

My big site worked fine too!!! I was worried because there were like 400 pages and over 1000 graphics but it all worked well. And this time, Front Page put in the index in the right spot so I just deleted the original index. And I am glad that I used Front Page instead of other tools because I am so dependent on includes and other Front Page components.
