All of a sudden, I have been having problems publishing to a FrontPage Website. I was getting an "httpd.conf" error.

The hosting company is a well known brand. I will not mention their name at this stage. They sent me the following reply. I know FrontPage is nearing the end of its life. But is it this bad?

They said:

"FP2003 does not have much documentation and this makes it more difficult for us to handle. We suggest using an older version of FP as it is better documented, but even still it is unsupported by Microsoft themselves. With a program with so many problems, there is a wide array of issues that could be possible and so we try to eliminate the most common first. Please understand that we offer support for FrontPage on a very limited support basis.

Note that with FP2003, you may have to reinstall the extensions after you publish a site or after a certain amount of time. Please make sure this is done periodically to ensure minimal downtime to your sites. "

As far as I can see this is not a windows server, but Apache so you might like to suggest that your host looks at this from MS,
FP extensions on Apache

I use FP2003 on a Windows server and have never been told to reinstall extensions periodically; yes, they can go bad for unknown reasons, but that has been very rare in my experience. Then again my host understand what they are doing [;)] As for reverting to an older version of FP, I have never heard such piffle. Tell them that they have to apply the FPSE to individual webs as well as uninstall/reinstalling.

If BobbyD is around I am sure that he will give you some very good server advice, but for my part I would be looking for a new, better informed host.

Two options: 1) Ask your host to re-install the FPSE. 2) As caz suggested, find a new host that is more familiar with FPSE - there are a TON of hosts around.

I'm not a FP fan but anyone saying that older versions are better than 2003 has to be off their trolley. It's the only version I didn't have problems with.

I have had a client's host tell me that while they offer FrontPage support, that FrontPage generated Error messages are atrocious in respect of narrowing a problem. That also had to do with publishing - the problem continues and I now just FTP to that client's site using FileZilla, but have to upload the entire site each time and not just the tiny update I've done.

Eh? You should only have to upload the one page you've changed plus any associated files that change with it, not the entire site.

Most changes on that site are in an include that has all the latest news.

If I publish the include only it doesn't change, if I publish the include and say the index.htm, the updated include only shows on the index.htm page, the rest of the site that uses that include shows the old one.

Sounds like that's a caching issue. As Jaybee says, you shouldn't have to upload the whole thing every time.

So would most of the pros on here but unfortunately this forum attracts a lot of people who are totally unfamiliar with code. Presenting them with a text editor will leave them cold. They need a WYSIWYG. FP isn't good but it's a start. Expression Web is better but still not great as it has too many nasties in it.

In an ideal world the WYSIWYGs would produce decent code or all web developers would learn what supports their site and use it but it's not an ideal world and I suspect, never will be [&o]
