Favicon - theres never been a better time to have one - 5/12/2007 12:13:35
One of the changes in IE 7 is in the way favicons are handled. No longer are favicons requested and displayed only by the action of a user bookmarking your site; if a favicon is present, IE 7 will display it in the location bar.

IE 7 also displays favicons in tabs, matching the branding opportunity long enjoyed by Mozilla-based browsers like Firefox and Camino as well as the Opera family. If your clients haven't been favicon aware, they are sure to become so shortly.

Be proactive and include favicons as part of your design

The ever so lovely Firefox has been doing that for ages.

A little link spamming going on here perhaps? :)

Yep, I have to admit a few of mine feature animated favicons too. They amuse me greatly when I get bored. (I have a small brain and little things amuse me before anyone points that out.)

My current dilemma though is that my current project is a site about breast cancer. Any ideas for what I can put on the favicon? :)

Perhaps a pink ribbon!

Isn't that the symbol for breast cancer?

It probably is going to have to be a pink ribbon, though I have to say that I'm now hearily sick of pink ribbons and pinkness in general. The whole site is pink and shades thereof. :) I had a spell when I seemed to do nothing but blue and green, and longed for someone to come along that didn't want blue or green....so now I end up with one client who wants lilac, and another one that wants pink! :)

Favicons - are they small 16x16 pixel jpeg file, saved in 16 colours that is saved as a .ico file in the root directory of the site?

Yep, and then I use the following script in the header:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" >

For XHTML I always use the following
<link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
