MySQL Database vs Access - 5/15/2007 7:18:24
I am running a SMF forum on my site and it uses a MySQL database. I used a Snitz board for years which used an Access database.

My question is, shouldn't a MySQL database be much faster than Access? I am getting some complaints about the SMF board speed since I installed it. I have done everything that is mentioned in the SMF discussion archives to speed it up. I never received speed complaints on the Snitz board and its Access database. Any thoughts?

Given similar data structures/layouts and system configurations, meeting minimum requirements, I would say that MySQL easily outperforms Access. But, given that your environment, usage, system configurations, etc. are probably all different it may not be fair to compare. I'm not familiar with the SMF forum, and would be curious to hear what the thoughts are in the discussions as to why it is slow. How busy are your forums?

My forums averages about 6-10 users at a time and they view about 5, 000 page views a day. I to would be interested to see what other SMF users will say. I have about 3-4 regulars on DSL who say it takes them about 10-12 seconds to open each post. I use DSL and breeze through in 1-2 seconds at most.

My understanding about Access on the web is that it really slows down when multiple users are trying to access it at the same time.

In my case thus far the Snitz forums that used Access was faster for a higher percentage of visitors than the SMF forums based on MySQL

I have a busy SMF forum where it's not uncommon to see 30-40 people online concurrently and we've had no complaints about page loading speed. There has been a marked difference though since we switched hosts a couple of months back. With the old hosts and 5-10 users online, there was a noticeable delay in page loading and a fair bit of time outs. Another of my forums, not half as busy, with probably only a handful of people online at the same time, and that's unbelievably slow. Same SMF version, same PHP version, and same MySQL version, but a very flaky db server.

SMF is known for being lightweight, code-wise, not suffering from the code bloat of some forum systems, and doesn't tend to over-strain db servers. As Brian says, given similar data structures and configurations, MySQL easily outperforms Access.

Don't forget though that you've got a web server interacting with the MySQL server, and most probably hardware firewalls. Are the servers clustered and load balanced? There's various bits that work together serving a dynamic page, and any one of those can cause a bottleneck. On top of that you've got general internet congestion and connection speeds. Even though I'm on a relatively fast connection, mine noticeably drops in the evenings, so it's not quite as simple as MySQL v Access.

I agree womble but I simply cannot figure out what is causing some of my visitors to have the slowdowns they do. For instance, two who I am trying to help run basically the same configuration and use the same ISP I do.

If it were a server issue would not the slowdowns be sporadic among visitors instead of causing a problem for some all the time?

If it's only certain users who are affected, I'd suspect it's a general internet congestion problem - something like over-subscription at the local exchange for example. Last year my local exchange was apparently being "upgraded", but I had a good 3-4 months when my connection speeds were appalling and I regularly lost my connection for short spells. Page load times for even simple pages was ridiculously slow.

The other thing it could be, thinking back to the problems here a while back, is DNS problems. Load times here were really slow on and off, but some people in some areas seemed to be affected more than others.

One of those having a problem and is the local history expert in our area that I need back on the board has had two days when he zipped through the board. Would you contact your host about this?
