Panoramic Earth - Homepage Menus - 5/24/2007 8:26:10
Hi all,

This is a kind of poll about the homepage of Panoramic Earth.

First thanks for all the comments in site review a short while back. I am beginning to work on the new Homepage layout and design (previous comments re the logo are being dealt with!)

At present there is a list of the last 5 images added, and I am thinking of adding a few other lists here to help people dive in. These lists would replace the content above the map on the home page. Below are the suggested ones, and the question is would you use them, would they be helpful, would you think of others:

  • Newest images (as now)
  • Recently updated destinations - ie if someone adds an image to Paris, then Paris would appear here. This list may not change as quickly as the list of newest images.
  • New Photographers
  • Most prolific photographers
  • User Favorites - This would need further work as it would mean building in a voting system beside each panorama. Do people use this kind of thing much? I am wondering if it would be worth the work.

Any comments useful. Oh yes, will probably move the drop down location selection menu to a more visible place!

I like the newest images list and I think that the recently updated destinations list might be useful. I'm not sure that info about the photographers is necessary (although if you're a photographer you'd probably have a different perspective!) as the site is about the photos and the locations rather than specifically about who took the photos.

I think the favourites thing wouldn't be worth the hassle to build it and although people do vote in polls I personally think that this particular format doesn't need it.
