legit email spammer - 5/28/2007 15:22:30
Hi i was wondering if there is an authority to look up email servers, so see if they are registered to broadcast emails. Is there even such a thing? I have 20,000 clients in my database that have opt to recieve a newsletter. I want to email each one, but don't want to be flagged as a spammer, how would i prevent being black listed, can i register somewhere as legit?

Thanks!

You can be bonded by some services and there are some whitelist IP services as well. Of course, it's up to the recipient's email server to use those services

First off there's a pretty good chance that your host will have some sort of throttle on the server to prevent you sending out more that say 100 emails per hour. They don't want their server blacklisted as it'll hit all their clients not just you.

With 20k emails going out it's going to take days at that rate.

I had a similar situation with a client and we went down the managed system route with an email specialist. It's not done on your host so it won't affect your site. They handle shipping mails out but they have an automated method of making sure they don't dump a load of emails to the same mail servers within a short space of time. I would seriously recommend using that route and/or looking at providing an RSS feed so your clients can opt to receive.

The service I used for emails was YMLP and they are great. Good prices too.

I'd suggest that you look for a managed email host solution. I had the same issue as you but I only had 9000 emails. I tried to do it myself but throttling was a huge problem and cause my comp to hang. I moved to this other Aweber which managed it for me instead. It is a bit ex but the performance is great.
