RE: Frontpage freezes - 6/22/2001 16:17:00
This is long - sorry - suggest you copy it onto the clipboard pop it into word or something similar and print it out.mps. Hi again and whoooo boy. I did a bit of searching both through my records and a few other places just to make sure that the situation hadn’t changed and I’ve rarely read such venomous posts from people who were big time pis**d off. Sorry about the delay a meeting with business partner took hours longer than Ithought it would. Are you sitting comfortably? - then we’ll begin YAY! a gpf - that's good it means that frontpage and something else are "fighting" and that operating system has just decided to give up. Excellent that's useful to know it suggests to me that there could be a profile problem or a corrupt dll or a bad regstry entry. We’ll try for a minimum fix first. /Begin minimal fix/ Stage 1 Ensure that you close programs like norton crashguard, .norton safe delete etc systray.exe is fine and obviously explorer itself. Nothing else should be running. Step 1. Using explorer clear out your temporary directory. Usually this will be usually in C:\windows\temp Step 2. Try to start frontpage. Step 3. If it doesn’t work Step 4. Try to run detect and repair from the cd Step 5. If that didn’t work go to stage 2 Stage 2 As you’re a Windows 98 user you have a very good Free registry optimizing tool from microsoft. It’s called SCANREG.EXE. there are a few things you need to know about it: 1. Scanreg only works in DOS Mode. 2. It will Backup/Restore and Fix the registry. Here’s how to use it: Step 1. Open a dos window ensure that you are in the windows directory and type the following command exactly as shown below: Scanreg /fix. Step 2. Exit the dos window restart your computer and try to run frontpage. NOTE: Scanreg also works in Windows 95. and has a windows counterpart Scanregw.exe. I have found Scanregw to be essentially useless and on two occasions it actually caused more harm I don’t use scanregw.exe - ever!.. If you’ve some odd configuration you may need to use explorer to find scanreg. If explorer can’t find it Download from here. http://allf18.virtualave.net/scanreg.zip and stick the unzipped files in your windows directory. Step 3. If that didn’t work go to stage 3. Stage 3. Step 1. Using explorer locate the following file - it should be on the same disk as frontpage
cmdui.pref Step 2. Take a careful note of where it was located copy it to diskette (just in case) Step 3. Delete it. Step 4. Try FrontPage again. If that didn’t work uninstall it again (sorry) and we’ll get a bit more drastic. /end minimal fixes/ You now have a system minus Frontpage - however the uninstallation doesn’t always work. Step 1. Run scanreg /fix again. Step 2. Now start the registry cleaner that I suggested you download. Step 3. Click the uninstall tab. Step 4. Scroll through the list of Entries Looking for a reference to Microsoft Frontpage 2000 Sr1-1 or SR-2 Step 5. There shouldn’t be an an entry for Microsoft FrontPage 2000 SR-1 or SR2 but if there is click the checkbox and click on uninstall. Step 6. Wait till the program has finished. Step 7. Next click on the tools menu Step 8. Select registry cleanup. Step 9. Select “do them all.” Step 10. Restart the computer when everything is finished. You should by now have have a totally clear system and are ready to re-install Frontpage again (once more with feeling! ) Guidance for install: Pre-installation Ensure that nothing other than explorer and systray are running.- run scandisk and defrag. If you haven’t run defrafg before it can take a long time - it’s worth it. Step 1. Once again make sure that nothing is running - no utilities nothing except explorer, systray and the installation program. Step 2. Do a custom install manually selecting everything you want to run from “My computer.” Step 3. Follow the registration wizard - don’t cancel the registration fill it out in full and let it do its thing online. One or other of the above should work based on my what you’ve described and my experience of the problem. If you don’t have a working copy by then I can suggest a few other things but they’ll involve afair bit of hacking manually - again not difficult but a bit fiddley. - let me know how you get on. i'll check back here tomorrow. ------------------ Hope this helps :-) Gorilla aka Mark Saunders http://www.computerdriving.com
