Cpanel and Frontpage - 6/3/2007 21:58:56
Hi

Heard news that the newest version of Cpanel coming out will not support frontpage. Is this really true? My host mentioned this to me a couple of weeks ago, too. What does this mean to us frontpage users? Do I need to switch to Expression Web or??? Or find a host ONLY for frontpage hosting like immediately? Does anyone know more about this? I was reading up on the expression web site here at outfront but seems there is no definite answer. I guess I am afraid that my host will say, gotta move all your sites now or something and it is stressful thinking about it. Thanks!

If your host decides to use the new version then FPSEs are out so you have choices.

1. Take a close look at your sites and see exactly how much bot driven stuff you have inserted that actually needs the FPSEs to run. There's a FAQ in the Hints and Tips forum that lists them all. Once you know the situation of what will no longer work, take a view whether you're better off replacing them with something a little more usable or......

2. Switch to Expression Web but you'll still have to sort out some of the things above or....

3. Find a host who'll keep the FPSEs going but be aware that eventually they may have no choice themselves as the FPSEs are no longer supported by Microsoft and if any security issues arise they won't get fixed. Tom Brunt is currently supporting FPSEs as are others.

Thanks Jaybee!

And I guess a fourth choice would be to switch to Dreamweaver or something else like it.

Almost all of my clients use an online form. I'll go through the questions for this. Does the entire website need to be redone in Dreamweaver if I switch? I have over 90 websites I have designed and a long waiting list of more to start. It is making me think I should not even design anything else with FP.

I thought I would jump back in and edit this note. I have heard from my host and they say I have lots of time yet and I have done quite a bit of searching for dreamweaver info and see that I can convert sites from FP to dW without any problem. I will just miss the old "publish" instead of FTP. But guess it is time to move forward. I will really miss FP tho once I stop using it. I don't know why they just didn't leave us alone to happily go along the way we were. I can only imagine what the internet (websites) will be like once all of this happens. Really sad:)

The new cPanel will have support for FPSE.

The new cPanel will also run Apache 1 OR Apache 2, however, if you run Apache 2, FPSE won't work.

There isn't a tool to convert a website in FrontPage to a website in Dreamweaver. DW lacks features that some FrontPage websites use (such as all of the web components).
