Free icons and graphics - 6/6/2007 17:54:17
Getting free/cheap icons and graphics for sites (good quality ones anyway) is always a problem, but very important, because graphics can either make or break a site. For stock photos that are either free or very cheap, I use either istockphoto, stock.xchng (and their sister commercial site stockxpert), and dreamstime, all of which have images available from $1. Also important though are the little graphics, things like icons, bullet points and such like. Bullets: some here, here, here, and here Little icons are also very useful, and used carefully can really brighten up a site. There are loads of little icons about if you do a search, but a lot of them really aren't very good quality. Some of the better quality ones I've come across and used are: - FamFamFam, which has a lovely set of over 700 little icons that are really good and can be used on forums, blogs, websites, etc. - the Sweetie icons too are lovely and can be used in a variety of things (Creative Commons licence) - there's also Maxpower that's got icons from a variety of artists - and some very useful free basic pixel icons at WebsiteIcons.com ...and last, but by no means least, my favourite at the moment though is IconBuffet. They do standard paid icon sets, but they also have a large selection of free icon sets on numerous different subjects that you can use on websites, forums, in sigs, as avatars etc. (my 7 yr old nephew at the moment's using some of them on his website and in Word documents an pictures and stuff), which you can get your paws on by trading with other members. The icons are in 16x16, 24x24 and 32x32 sizes, in Mac and PC formats (gif, png, bmp, tiff) Mac icons and Windows .ico icons. Membership's free, and you get 10 "tokens" a month to trade sets with other members, and a supply of "stamps" to send icon sets to other members. Everyone gets one free delivery of a icon set a month that doesn't cost any tokens, and altogether I think there's over 80 icon sets to collect. It's great fun and rather addictive. They've got a community blog forum, and it's a nice friendly place. If you're seriously pixel addicted, they also do a VIP membership that costs $6 a month or $48 for 12 months membership, for which you get a higher token allowance, and $25 off their paid icon sets. For free high quality graphics, you really can't beat them. <---- clicky
