new external hard drive - 6/10/2007 16:29:42
i'm looking for a cheap and reliable external hd. all it needs to do is sit there and save my photos and vids of my boys and a few other little backing up bits. size isn't that important (honest!) nor is speed but i saw this at my local store that i can buy online and wondered if anyone had even heard of the make.

are there any makes to avoid or particularly recommend?

anyway this is the beastie

sorry it's in finnish but the numbers are quite obvious 7200 rpm, 250 mb, 1 year guarantee ...

Im a fan of 2.5" drives - mainly as I use a notebook. 2.5s are a lot more portable and quite handy to use for file transfers between PC's.

So size does matter for me :)

You are usually better off with buying a good hard drive (Seagate w/ a 5yr warranty), and then an external enclosure.

Agree.

Just bought a Western Digital 120GB USB2 powered external hard drive for my laptop at CompUSA - $119.99. About the size of my Palm LifeDrive :)

BTW, came with backup software I've never heard of. Using Acronis True Image 10 instead.

I don't use partitions but Acronis True Image has the capability to establish, then read/write to/from them.

My experience with defragging is if done frequently (once a week +/-) then run times are not excessive. Also, defragging can be done in the background although the utililty can be a system hog if hd analysis shows 10% + fragmentation.
