RRogers123 -> Personal Web Server and Windows XP (11/6/2001 20:07:00)

I am in the process of upgrading from Windows 98 to XP and the upgrade report informs me that Personal Web Server will not work with XP. I am running the server so I can work on my web pages. Do I have to install IIS? If so, where do I get it? Is it difficult to install/run? Are there any tips on intalling IIS and which options to choose? I have a modest FP2K web site but it does have a database.
An unrelated question: Is it worth upgrading to FP 2002? Thanks.

Thanks for the response. I am planning to install XP Home and, from what I can gather, you need XP Professional to run server software.

Rian -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (11/8/2001 20:19:00)

UPDATE - Seems Microsoft pulled the Knowledgebase article about running PWS on XPhome..... Got my hands on a new laptop with XPhome preinstalled this weekend and lo and behold.....Contrary to the MS documentation I referenced earlier, I COULD NOT find any way to add IIS. The CD is also just a Toshiba "recovery" CD for XP and I could not poke around in it for IIS.

Also refer to the link by Spooky at the bottom of this page. The short answer is that IIS needs XPpro and that PWS is dead and unsupported. Sorry about the confusion! The MS wins again!

RRogers123 -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (11/8/2001 20:35:00)

"...for advanced users who regularly test unsupported software configurations." That doesn't sound like me. I guess IIS is the way to go. Is there any problem running this on a home computer? Thanks.

Talismanic -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (12/3/2001 21:16:20)

RRogers123, did you get this working ok? I have a new lap top due sometime this week with Windows XP and I am wondering if I will need to do a duel boot. If I can run IIS that would be fine because that is what I use with 2000. Did you have any problems with this setup? Any gotchas I should be aware of?

In a worse case scenario, does FrontPage 2000 act as a sever to test scripts?

caywind -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (12/3/2001 22:46:21)

Rian nailed it, XP and IIS. Haven't run XP and IIs yet but I did do the w2k IIS setup and it was sweet. Up all the time, service starting after a power out, easy administration. Set them up with Frontpage and the "live" publishing and they love it!

Talismanic -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (12/4/2001 6:45:36)

After reading that KB article along with a few others I don't think you can run IIS with XP home Edition. It looks like it is standard with the Pro Edition as it was in 2000. One KB article I read gave me the impression that you couldn't even use FrontPage as a server for scripting. Can some one confirm that for me? Has any one done a duel boot system loading 2k on a XP system.

caywind -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (12/4/2001 14:51:55)

boy would that stink. I can't test XP stuff much. guess I'm going to have to break down and buy another box of bugs from MS

jan_kees_schakel -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/6/2002 7:41:35)

I've got the same problem: Just bought XP HE and found out (too late) that PWS / IIS don't run on XP. Is there another server I could use? Apache? Tomcat? Any experience with that (including FP 2000 server extensions? Or is the only solution to buy an upgrade to XP PRO?

caywind -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/6/2002 13:01:03)

Jan Kees - what has your experience been with XP so far. My first impression is that it's slow!. 1.2 ghz, 256 ram??? Which leads to this...

It looks like I'm going to have to do this for a station, XP is too different for her.. Anyway XP says it can be done, just do 2K first, alas fdisk

Allan -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/6/2002 23:58:27)

I am about to install XP Home and am a little confused, it seems from Rian that you can install IIS (instead of PWS) and FP2000 works fine is this the case? I want to be able to preview my pages on the disk based web before publishing.

jan_kees_schakel -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/7/2002 8:02:30)

Caywind, my experience is almost nill: I just have the machine (AMD1.2G, 512M) 2 weeks. My previous one was a P1 133, so everything is superfast compared with that one. In the meantime I managed to get an illegle XPpro with IIS, but I don't want to install that one on my (just bought, legal) XPhe. Is there a way to get the IIS installed from that disk or doesn't IIS run on XPhe? Confusion all around!
I just want the same as Allen: view my designed pages (3 sites, one with 15 subwebs) locally before publishing.

caywind -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/7/2002 12:54:48)

Let's try it!

Actually, I think I'll try it. You guy's hold on a sec...

Allan -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/9/2002 21:12:57)

I installed XP HE and no PWS. My FP2001 seems to work just fine, I can preview pages that I have done and all the effects that I programmed with FP seem to work.

jan_kees_schakel -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/11/2002 8:55:38)

Allen, I am convinced that the standard installation with FP2000/2 works. However, the standard FP server can handle only a limited amount of subwebs (less then approx. 6)within a web. Therefore I used on my old system the MS Personal Web Server (PWS, which doesn't function in XP )

caywind -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/11/2002 10:41:52)

Sorry, the building that the XP box is in was lock-down over the weekend, I hope to test that installation tonight.

jan_kees_schakel -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/15/2002 7:46:12)

Hi Caywind, it's more difficult then you expected? I want to stick to Frontpage and FP extensions and therefore I truely hope the best for your test! The only other thing I can think of is building a network with my old W98 computer and run my site on PWS from there.

Can't find IIS for XP either. Compaq cd-set. wasn't it supposed to be on w2k cds?

<spellcheck> </spellcheck>

caywind -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/17/2002 22:28:15)

WOrked on this for a while today.

Posted a Question at the frontpage newsgroup. Got an answer from a MS MVP. Absolutely no IIS on XP Home! Also Absolutely no PWS on XP home.

Then I tried to install it and I can't find it on the Compaq XPhome CD. Found it on w2kpro, but how to install? It's not in the list of Windows components that appears in XPHome, "Have Disk"? I'm stumped...

XP Score so far...
No domain support
No web server
My users report confusion with the interface
I also may be experiencing problems with office files

All of this I presume is to "trick" users into having to buy XPPro for $200? How can MS have the audacity to call something ".NET" when they have shorted their newest operating system of two of the basics of anything that I understand to be ".NET" related.

So then the result will be that if you want to Run a Web server to test the FP webs you will have to have XP Pro!

Xtreme2000 -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/17/2002 23:04:33)

That is the definate. XP Pro will let you run IIS on your system. But if you are using XP Home and it don't let you use IIS, you'll need the third party software (you can get it free) to run it. But it will be a lot of hassel.

Gil -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/18/2002 5:57:49)

After reading thru this whole thread I'm confused. XP "HOME" is a home version of the OS - for "home" use. XP"PROFESSIONAL" is a professional version for those who use the computer for "PROFESSIONAL" use. So, if you build web siteS (why else would you need IIS?), you are a "professional" and should be using XP PRO - No?

jan_kees_schakel -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/18/2002 9:54:03)

Gil, you could see it like that, but there are a lot of non-profs working for free to help non-profit organisations with their website (in my case a primary school organisation; main web plus a subweb for each location).
Caywind, did the MS MPV say that it is technically not possible to run it on the XPhe?
I have now the following options: (1) build a network with my old computer and run PWS from the Win98 there. (2)Try Spooky's link to install the IIS. Probably the 1st is a lower risc solution.

I have finally got through the thread that spooky sent, if you read about 1/2 way down, there is a link from a guy that tells how to install IIS on XPHome I don't think it looks too bad actually...I have however decided to try it only on a test system, that may tke a while to get ready...heres the howto -

General HOWTO for running IIS in Windows XP Home Edition.

by Richard Sandoz - Certified Java Programmer

(1) locate and edit the file C:\WINDOWS\INF\SYSOC.INF

(2) locate a section called [Components]

(3) find a line like this:
iis=iis.dll,OcEntry,iis.inf,hide,7

(4) change it to this (the iis cab in the i386 xp home folder looks to
be nothing)
iis=iis2.dll,OcEntry,iis2.inf,,7

(some sort of ms caching thing keeps sticking back iis.dll when I try
to nuke it. quickly renaming and making hidden dir called iis.dll
seems to thwart, but not worth it, so iis2.dll is good enough)

(5) I grabbed the iis.dl_ and iis.in_ from win2k advanced server cd.

I would guess similar techniques would work from W98, FP, etc.
Use "EXPAND IIS.DL_ IIS2.DLL" from a command prompt
Same for IIS2.INF, place IIS2.INF in C:\WINDOWS\INF and IIS2.DLL in
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SETUP

(6) Now when I did "add windows programs" from the control panel's add
new programs,

I had IIS options and I could even check em off. yippee - could not
check em off from my xppro cd :(((

I just went with the defaulted ones though (all i needed was iis web
server)

(7) It will prompt you for files. Get em from MS XP Home CDs, Adv
Server CDs, C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\INETSRV, C:\WINDOWS\I386, etc. (It will
tell you the file it needs, you just need to have a searcher going,
probably the CDs will have all you need)

(8) You can get to your IIS from Control Panel's Administrative
Programs.
I stuck in an index.html file and reconfigure IIS to work like this.
No go :(((
I right clicked on my inetpub folder and did something with shared
folders. No go :(((
I looked at the event viewer and saw the error of my ways.
Go to IIS and goto Directory Security tab and click Edit button and
Browse for the user setup on my laptop.

(9) Yippee, hello world from http://localhost

I won't support this solution unless paid to. I am an out of work
developer looking for work.

I bought a Toshiba 5005 laptop which came with XP home.
I then bought Win XP Professional.
I have bunches of CDs from when I was a MSDN subscriber.
From a general search on the internet I found contradictions.

Microsoft says you need professional XP to do IIS period.
q310090 was yanked from their site which had the "workaround" for
this.

When I tried to setup XP upgrade to pro, my laptop rebooted and hung
on an xp logo with an animated graphic.
I have verified this to be the case with others as well. Upgrading to
xp pro isn't an option for this laptop.

I wish I could've done this but the Compaq restore is some exotic Roxio Go-Back set. I didn't evaluate XPHE, if anybody has evaluation XPHE cd's I'd be interested...

darklite -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/23/2002 12:33:47)

here I am considering my new laptop, a sony VAIO, and its Xp home edition OS...
I have 4 choices:
1)Use Apache web Server and ChiliSoft ASP prodoucts {no luck, chili doesn't support XP Home edition}
2)Use the dll's from my win2k pro cd {a bit scary, since the laptop is new and there would be no support if the machine blows up}
3)Upgrade to XP Pro {again no support from the happy people of ony, and not sure the upgrade would work on my laptop}
4) Run win2k in dual for a while and then ditch XP Home edition for good...

Do we really need computers I wonder?

caywind -> RE: Personal Web Server and Windows XP (3/23/2002 13:28:54)

I vote for # 4
