Just took delivery of a slick, new Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop. To compliment my desktop I opted for one of the last XP Pro systems offered preloaded with MS Office 2003 Small Business.

Machine and all programs work fine Except Outlook which creeps, stops and fails to respond to mouse clicks. There are known problems with SpyBot/IE7/HTML but this isn't my situation since I use plain text, IE6 and have never downloaded SpyBot.

Glaring anomoly : Windows Task Manager reports 50% CPU usage when Outlook is open/idle. By comparison, my desktop running the same program on the same system shows 0-19% CPU usage. Obviously high system resource usage for the sickie is the culprit but does anyone have any idea what could be causing it?

I'm willing to pay for MS paid technical support if necessary or anything else short of buying another machine (which I don't associate with the cause in any case).

a bit of a shot in the dark - especially as i use mozilla thuinderbird - but does outlook still compact messages automatically?? maybe unlikely if you have hardly any messages either new or deleted ...

No, compacting the data (.pst) file is an Outlook option which I don't use.

BTW, I forgot to mention I have uninstalled/reinstalled MS Office 2003, used the CD "Repair" feature and used the Help "Detect & Repair" feature. I could have an NG program BUT the other Office modules work fine: Excel, Publisher, Word & Power Point. [:@]

not sure whether compacting means the same thing in outlook but i had real trouble with thunderbird running slow (a minute to display anything!) until i realised that everything i delete stays there (marked as deleted) until i compact the folders. might be worth trying for you? compacting i mean or shredding or whatever ms call it ;)

yes, you have to delete the items...then delete your deleted items...and if you really want them gone, you delete the deleted-deleted items.

I know it sounds off the wall but if you have Updates turned on, make sure they're configured for Windows Update and not Microsoft Update (there is a difference for those of you who did not know).

I actually had that problem, went to the MS Update site and reconfig'd my machine to use Win Update and I update Office on my own now.

I'm one who didn't[8D] BTW, for those of you, like me, who fit in the sadly uninformed category, this is in the Change Settings section of http://www.update.microsoft.com.

p.s. Still wrestling with the Outlook 2003 slowdown problem. Many internet forums dealing with this exact issue with no solid fix in sight. MS remains silent on the matter.

Outlook 2003 is working again, although functionality isn't anywhere near 100% - still some mouse delays, but email text input is OK. CPU usage continues high even at idle - now fluxates between 00 & 50%. In short, since my laptop is strictly used as a backup, I'll have to live with a semi-crippled program until MS comes out with a fix.

Here's what I did:

Deleted KB931768 (IE)
Reconfigured Outlook to open in the Outlook Today screen
Changed Security Zones > Zone Setting to Internet from Restricted Sites
Changed Mail Format to Use Microsoft Office Word to edit e-mail messages
Reconfigured Automatic Updates to Windows Updates only
Bought online and ran CounterSpy 2
Bought online and ran RegCure

When I had issues with Outloook 03, I spent hours trying to work through them, and decided to simply uninstall completely and reinstall. Everything is working again after that.

Just wanted to post that I had the exact same problem with Outlook 2003 being slow, also the process being at 50% when replying at some messages.
Seemed to be with external mail.

For me, removing KB931768 and rebooting did the trick.
This is a high priority update, so I decided to run Windows Update again (not using microsoft update as far as I know).

Then the cumulative update KB933566 was installed (which was already there).
Well, after that the crap returned!
Stupid thing is I have the exact same packages on mu laptop, not having the problem.
I finally decided to completely remove IE 7, not wanting to be vulnarable.

Thank you Microsoft, for your enormous piece of crappy software which caused me headdaches and lots of time!
Thank you guys for giving me the insight to get it fixed :).

Ah .... I forgot to mention that the machine I'm having trouble with (the Dell new laptop) is using IE6 - my custom built desktop is using IE7/Outlook 2003 with no problems [8D]

Same here.

Windows XP using IE6 and IE7, Vista using IE7, all using Outlook 2003. The CPU goes high especially on starting Outlook first thing when you log in.

If it happens to my machine (XP and IE7) it only happens for a minute or so, but our accountant's laptop (Vista and IE7) takes maybe 20 minutes to settle down.

Opening HTML emails takes an age. Rich Text and Plain Text pause for a second or three then open fine. Even closing HTML emails takes forever.

Recently users on XP and IE6 reported them same problem with their Outlook 2003. Thing is, we've been using 2003 for the last 2 years or so and this problem's only occured in the last 2 months or so.

And like everyone else, I can find a ton of complaints but no concrete solutions!

Looks like the hefty (120MB) Microsoft Office Service Pack 3 which, according to MS, "contains significant security enhancements, in addition to stability and performance improvements." has fixed this (particular) problem [&:]
