funk theory -> Learning CSS (6/17/2007 9:46:37)

I have applied a css style to my site on my local machine using dreamweaver. When i apply the style in the application (dw) the style doesnt show up however when i preview it any browser eg ff or IE its fine, anyone have any idea why?

Are you using an external stylesheet as opposed to inline styles or styles in each page head (external is best)?

I wouldn't trust any WYSIWYG editor's preview - I'd suggest always a proper browser to check stuff.

I kind of understand what you mean. I created a stylesheet in dreamweaver and was told to create a folder called css and put all the css styles in there.

I'm not familiar with the workings of DW, but it sounds like it's an external stylesheet you've got set up. You should be able to find a file in that folder called xxxxx.css (where xxxxxx is whatever you called it when you saved it).

As Tailslide says, you're best checking out your pages in browsers themselves rather than relying on DW's preview because it's only then you get an accurate view of exactly how it'll display. As to why it's not showing up in DW, if it's showing okay in the browser then your file path to the file must be right. I'd suspect it'll be probably something to do with how/where from DW's configured to read styles. Hopefully someone who's familiar with DW should be along who might be able to help with that.

Dominic - I'm not sure where you're learning your CSS from, but some sources are better than others.

I thought I'd pass this tutorial site on : http://www.cssbasics.com/ as it's very simple and easy to follow.

My opinion is that it's best to start out as manual as possible when trying to get to grips with this - WYSIWYGs have a habit of stuffing things in to stylesheets and markup that you weren't aware of which can end up being confusing.
