Testing site on my pc - 6/18/2007 9:27:40
Dear all, sorry to ask what may be a very dumb question, but...

I want to be able to test (pretty much) all aspects of a website I'm creating before uploading it to a www location. At the moment, think 'Frontpage Corporate Presence Wizard', but it'll get expanded to include asp and database stuff.

Currently creating on FP2000 (running on WinXP Pro), the files and folders for this site are within My Documents.

Would any of you wonderful people be able to give me an idiot's guide, step by step to allowing me to run locally, followed by going public...please?!!

(for the info, I have IIS 5.1 installed, and installed FPServerExtensions off the Office CD-ROM)

Many thanks for any help!
Alex, Nottingham, UK.

That should be enough to get you started. What happens when (in FrontPage) you try to open:

http://localhost

Do you get anything with that?

My thoughts entirely!

I can look at regular pages no problem, http://localhost opens the work-in-progress-site as I would expect, and I can click hyperlinks etc ok, but anything more 'advanced' than that yields error message (in the first instance, the search function doesn't work - it insists that I ...publish to a web server that has the FrontPage Server Extensions installed), and I'm not going to start tearing my hair out on databases until I know the basics are functioning.

I assumed that I would have the functionality I can get/expect on the web, but on my PC...am I foolishly naive?

EDIT: Just 'repaired' my Office installation, and got this message:
"The document root of the web server where you are trying to install the server extensions already contains a disk-based web".
Is this to be expected, or is something awry?

I can't remeber exactly IIS 5 but with IIS 6 you need to enable ASP and FP extensions. I don't believe you had to in 5 but you may want to double check.

Also, see if you can upload a simple DB file and build a DRW to it. You already know this, but if that works you should have FP extensions working fine.

Have you run any of those IIS 'hardening' patches?

Hmmm...it gets steadily worse...!

Yesterday, requesting the .asp page (from a link on default page via http://localhost) yielded up the page in question, but littered with fragments of code (sort-of expected).

Today, same gives yards of html code, like a view->page source...

Is it worth uninstalling/reinstalling stuff, and if so, what are the sneaky bits I will forget?!

I wasn't grey when I started this!

Thanks in advance!

Probably it is worth uninstalling and starting again, this thread should guide you, especially the order of steps for installing the various files.
