. . . I've moved into a beautiful little farm house, I love it here, everything so far is great except that I had to go 6 days without a phone connection and thus no internet.

The problem has been "fixed" this afternoon, I now have a phone that works and dial-up internet that varies between 24 - 46 kbps, but it drops out so often it's almost not worth using.

I have a Broadband connection on order, they had tried to connect me while the line fault was still faulty but I've called them this afternoon and had my order reinstated, but I'm concerned. Very concerned.

I know wireless Broadband may have to be an option, but I'm wondering whether adsl will really be available, but I'm concerned because the phone line is sooo crackly.

My ISP assures me that this doesn't matter as that only affects dial-up connections, that Broadband is different, but does anyone here know, or can reassure me as to whether the current static I get when making an ordinary phone call will affect my chances of getting adsl?

Nicole

Your ISP could be right because adsl uses a different wire than voice traffic does, but if there is some general fault with the phone line -like it's physically damaged down the line somewhere then it will cause problems. You will just have to wait and see. :)

Thanks Caz,

That's the exact reason that my ISP gave that it should work - but I am skeptical.

I'll have to wait and see.

The line quality will almost certainly have an impact I believe and you may find the speeds you get are not that great - say 300 kbps depending on how bad the line is and distance to your exchange.

Hopefully it should be useable though.

I'm about 4km from the exchange - he mentioned something about that too.
