Will using FrontPage cut the number of viewers down too... - 6/21/2007 20:52:49
Hi there. As I understand it, the only people who can view FrontPage sites correctly are Internet Explorer users. Is this right? If so, am I missing a huge population of people out there by using FrontPage or do you guys think that most people have I.E. browsers. Also, correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe other browsers work well with FP. I'm considering rebuilding my website if FP is excluding too many people. Thanks so much for the input!

Just using FrontPage will not make your site "not work" in other browsers. I have sites done in FP that work perfect in all browsers. We need to see the site so we can tell you if it renders properly or not. Got a LInk??

FrontPage is just a tool and although it is notorious for trying to write pretty poor code (which can lead to cross-browser issues) if you double check what it's doing in the code view and correct it's errors then there should be no reason why a site constructed with FP wouldn't work in other browsers. You do need to be careful with some of the horrendous FP widgets (the photo gallery doesn't work well cross-browser) which are frankly, best avoided all together, but as long as you validate your code to remove errors and check other browsers yourself you should be ok. The key is to check as you go along. Download Firefox and use that as your primary checking browser, also check in Opera and finally in IE6 and IE7 (google "multiple IEs"). Firefox and Opera stick more closely to the "rules" than IE so it's easier to get things working there first and then tweak for IE's failings. If your site works properly in Firefox and Opera then you're probably (but not always) ok in the Mac browsers. You're correct in that although IE is still the majority browser - the percentage isn't as high as it used to be and it is very important to ensure your site works properly in other browsers.

Thanks guys. That's reassuring. I guess it's a matter of checking my code and since I'm very new to web design it will take a while. I checked the site in firefox and it looks o.k. There are a few gliches but overall it's o.k. The site is www.freeprintablebehaviorcharts.com Looks like I have some work to do! Thanks.

Also check thing out with Opera, if you have access to Linux then use Konqueror, and also don't forget MAC versions as they also render differently. For the most part though I use FF, IE, Opera and then go over to a friends house who owns a MAC. Take care, Brian
