Carol P -> Got a huge question on changing domain names! (11/13/2001 23:44:00)

I've searched without success, so I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction for the next step I take...

Our college has applied for the .edu extention that was made available beginning yesterday. We will be changing to an easy URL now rather than the long .cc.ia.us that nobody can ever remember. We're hosted off the state's ICN server and I am assuming we will continue this.

I've talked with the tech guys and they don't seem to be really anxious to move on this once we get the okay to use our new .edu extension. I don't blame them as I'm guessing this will be a major process!

So my question is: has anyone else ever done this? Can we run the two URL's simultaneously eventually just using the .edu? How difficult will it be to change our schools emails? (3,000+)

If anybody knows a site that explains all this, I would greatly appreciate the guidance to it!!

Thanks so much!

Carol,

Your server team shopul;d just point the .EDU to the existing domain and "presto" it's done. Takes about 5 minutes.

Then whatever domian is typed in the browser will retrieve the same site.

For emails - You "could" create new ones for the .EDU extension, but as long as the .EDU is pointed in the right place they'll all end up in the same mailbox with either address.

Gil,
Thank you once again! I am printing that out to show them! Have just a couple more little questions:

Which one of the domains will be the default one? I want it to be iowalakes.edu and not our current one...

Also, will the old email addresses eventually be able to be deleted completely?

And (okay, 3 questions!), we can do this ourselves, right? Won't need to go through the ICN network?

Thanks again!

(I MISSED Jimmy last weekend!! -- he was in Minneapolis which is just 3 hours from me... it's going to take me awhile to get over it! Guess that's what I get for not paying attention to his schedule for a few months...)

There really isn't a "default" they will both send the user to the same site equally.

I wouldn't. It won't hurt anything and someone could always have an old email address.

Right - it's all local configuration. Just as long as the registrar has your DNS servers IP.

Bummer - I missed him in Raleigh this summer, but we are planning on going to Key West for New Years. Margaritaville is closed to the public and Jimmy and some friends jam...
