Are DWT's in practice as bad as Shared Borders - 6/25/2007 5:04:02
I have made my first site with a dwt and am now thinking that they are impractical, even as bad as old shared borders seem to us now a few years on.
For example, on some pages I may want to place java script in the head tag, or the description tag is not editable, without manual movement which may not work properly unless it is above the title tag (say Microsoft).
Also on current web I am using aspx for a contact form and that needs scripting in the head of just that page, as well as aspx code at the top(had to remove the dwt from it).
Even ignoring aspx pages, can I move the begin editable doctitle tags to either side of the head tags without upseting the mechanism of dwt? I have seen in other posts when someone wants an onload in the body tag of one page the ewd
system wont let them do that. It keeps removing them when the dwt is saved and I feel it would do this to moved doctitle regions, which I was suggesting encompass the head tags but on the above example the body tag would need to be within the editable doctitle tag.... where does it all stop!

I am beginning to think dwt's are like shared borders in FrontPage, a good idea intially but practically constraining. Includes are looking a far more practical option, either asp or using the brilliant webot include that is an addon from wantolearn. Do I understand correctly that the webot still validates?

Regards
Phil

You could use plain old includes. I use PHP to do this but I'm guessing there's an ASP version that's just as simple. Or otherwise old fashioned SSIs?

Certainly with my PHP includes (obviously not using EW which doesn't play well with PHP) I have total control of what goes where. Would the ASP version or SSIs be easier for you than using DWTs?

I have used asp in the past but it stops you seeing the page in design view on the disk based webs.
Never tried SSI - is there a benefit and is this the same stuff that ends in shtml that sometimes gives problems to confirmation pages on the old FP forms system?
Does it work on servers where FPE's are installed, without having to ask our hosts for anything on shared servers - a pain!

Phil

If your using ASP.NET I would use a master page it is far better.

I would tend to agree. Once a site is published for example, all the linked pages need to be open to get updated for changes to the DWT. I've also had problems with link / image paths being wrong when left to EW. Even when using an absolute path any update rewrites it to what EW "believes" it should be. Especially true if using separate DWT's in lower level folders...:) :)
