Trojans Can Hide Behind Restore Points - 6/26/2007 10:10:15
Ouch!

,,, there is an unintended consequence of System Restore: When it creates a restore point, Trojans and viruses are included. Anti-virus programs are unable to clean these files

Very illuminating :) An excellent tip from Kim Kommando. Read the entire article Here

Larry, that's why I don't use a restore point.

A Restore Point recovery saved my bacon about a year ago :)

Given that I have understandable confidence in this procedure, what's wrong with ocassionally eliminating all Restore Points, running Anti-Virus, then restoring the Restore Point function?

Nothing is wrong with that. In fact I have seen that recommendation in several computer mags.

I don't see anything wrong with it ( I do it :)). It's a matter of realizing that if you have a problem with some "evil doer" infecting your machine Restore isn't going to help. Of course Grandma and probably her "internet savvy" nephew won't understand this.:):)

No matter what you use to back up your system, you still have the potenal to copy viruses, trojans & rootkits. Sometimes its best to make an image of a clean install of your OS & re-install it once a year after you santized your hard drive.

I've been given the unplanned "opportunity" to do this twice in the last 12 months due to hard drive failures :) Premeditated HD reformats aren't on the horizon for me :)

Point well taken. However, I've hit my comfort zone deleting Restore Points, doing a thorough "clean-up", then reinstating the Restore function. I'm so gun-shy I implement Acronis, Restore Point and incremental working file backups several times a week. Extra time? Yes. Do I sleep better? You betcha :)
