Dangerous SPAM Scams? - 7/16/2007 18:23:23
I've been inundated with two new types of SPAM messages directed to my business email address recently - 100 or more daily in addition to all the other crap I get (1) "You've received a greeting ecard from a School Friend" (Classmate) (Worshipper) (Family Member) (Neighbor) (Relative) (Pet Lover), etc. (2) messages with PDF attachments. Naturally I don't open these messages but I wonder if, in the instance of (1) greeting cards, will the site if called up have a Trojan or other virus? These sites are, variously, Postcards.com, Mypostcards.com, Netfuncards.com, etc. As to the SPAM messages with (2) attachments, I've read before that no one has found a way to imbed a virus in the PDF format. Has this changed? Very frustrating - I know I'm not alone but it doesn't make it better since I have to slog through so much chaff to find wheat that I'm afraid I might miss the wheat at some point Comments anyone?

You should contact the company (host) that handles your e-mail. They should be able to find a similar signature between all these messages, and then block them. This is something your host would need to do. A lot of times, the PDF attachments are simply image based advertising. In the past couple months there has been a huge issue with spammers getting around anti-spam stuff by sending an image that contains the spam message (as opposed to text in the e-mail). Some hosts have been able to correct their anti-spam stuff for the image only based spam, so these spammers now send it as a PDF. Fewer hosts actually include the PDF scans in their anti-spam tests.

Very odd. It shows up in NS 8.1 but not in 9.0
