I've noticed the other day while watching a DVD on my pc that my computer locked up (no blue screens or shutdowns) and the sound stuttered. I thought it was a fluke. Then it happened again. Everything locked up. I told my friend the problem, he said to clean my case and replace the CPU fan. Which I did. I brought it home and after a few hours the same lock up happened. How do I fix this problem????

You know that could be attributed to a LOT of things. Power supply fan dead. Over heating of some component. Not enough memory. Old PC. Graphic card couldn't handle the DVD. Loose cables. Viruses? Too many programs running in the background. ETC. When it locks up can you do a Ctrl/Alt/Delete? Really hard to answer your question without more info. What OS? How much memory you have? CPU type? Etc.

No, I can't do cntrl Alt Delete. The computer is completely frozen, can't move mouse or anything. Windows XP 1Gb of dual channel DDR ram. Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz. The computer is 2 years old basically. I also have an nvidia geforce 6600 256mb video card. I have an Antec True 380watt power supply. An Asus motherboard. I have 3 fans in the case (including the stock fan on my CPU). What do you suggest I do?

Power down, then boot to your XP CD and run "Repair". May or may not work - sounds like a trojan/virus to me. If you can get the machine up then run any and all anti-virus programs you have/can get your hands on. Also run the C:\ drive Properties/Tools/Volume checker.

Let me add to what I was saying before. The lock up occurs usually sometime after windows starts. It could be 5 minutes, 15, 1 hr, 3 hrs etc. It almost never occurs right away. Do you have any other suggestions before I go with a Windows Repair?

Check for C:\ drive Volume Errors first: My Computer >>Properties>>Tools. Check both disk options: (1) Automatically fix file system errors and (2) Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. After you elect this, restart and let machine go through the five process levels - takes about 45 minutes. Come to think of it, your machine is acting like mine did a couple of months ago. Long story made short: bad hard drive which I had to replace [:@] Make sure you keep good working file backups [8D]

I ran that and no problems found. How do I run a repair. I booted the XP CD and i chose r to repair. It asked me the admin password then it asked me which volume, which i picked 1 then it takes me to a command prompt C:\windows and I have no clue what to do next.

You do the following at your own risk. Here is the repair sequence: Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD and repair Ž. Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen. Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console. Repeat Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console. Press F8 to agree to the licence agreement. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box and then press R to repair Windows XP. Follow the on screen instructions to complete. You will not lose any programs or data but you will lose all Service Packs and any other Updates. As a matter of importance ensure that you visit Microsoft updates and download and install any found.

A thought b4 you go with the excellent aforementioned Repair Console tip: disconnect any periphals such as scanner, printer, external hard drive & USB devices 2c if lockup ocurs without them. If it doesn't, reconnect each device one-at-a-time until you isolate the offender. One of my many "blue screen of death" experiences was caused by a corrupted iomega external hard drive that passed both Device Manager and Volume checks [:'(]

Hi dude, if you are still experiencing the same issue, especially in games and movies try switching the video card. I had the same issue with shuttering sound and frozen display about a year ago in BF2142, HL2, UT, ext. I could not figure it out and with extensive support with nvidia they said my card might be bad. I could not beleave it but I bought the same card, only with the OC and it fixed all my freezing. But to make things short, sometimes if you have a frozen display and shuttering sound on any task that uses your video card beyond the desktop it could mean that your card is going bad. Hope this helps :)
