futurewebboss -> Site Review Request (7/24/2007 15:24:16)

After a lot of blood sweat and tears and posts in the asp forum regarding database challenges which were graciously answered by Spooky and RDouglas, we are ready to go into a pre-launch beta. The site is located at
http://www.the-filmmakers-channel.com
The intention is to provide an outlet for people to watch high quality independently produced films using a no buffering streaming video technology for less than $1.00. As well the platform we use provides filmmakers with a distribution solution they can use in any manner they like. So it is very democratic.
We know that there are some things left on the development table but we think it is functional enough to launch (at least we hope)

Anyway, any feedback will be appreciated.

Best Regards,
Daniel Latrimurti

By the way there are a number of great free movies as well as all the pay per view movies have been reduced to 50 cents. The plan is that after we finish our beta testing, to actively market to filmmakers to get more films and then to consumers.

Hi - It's very pretty looking indeed. The navigation on the left is very small by default - i'd seriously consider increasing it in size.

Other thing is that you've got all your styles inline within the tags themselves - this defeats the purpose of CSS - separating content and formatting. But also - it will make updating the site a real pain. much easier if it's all in an external stylesheet.

Shame about the tables - don't think they're really necessary but then that's just me!

Hi Tailslide,
Thanks for the input.
Old habits die hard and schedule pressures meant falling back on more of the familiar. Your input is appreciated.

What do the four marks (little bars with dots) on each side of the screen signify?

Those are just decoration.

Nice looking site, shame about the tables - in fact I agree with Tail wholeheartedly.

What if a Builder, an Electrician, an Aircraft Mechanic said the same thing?

The standadistas may be a bit sniffy, but I am sure that you will overhaul the site sometime when you have the time. That said I love the 1930's "Odeon" look of the site, very impressive that you brought it off without it looking too cheesy, well done.

You seem to have covered all the questions users might have in your FAQ page but it might be more useful if you pointed to this in some way in the home page. I am thinking more of incorporating this in the content rather than relying solely on the navigation. Yes, it is rather small and insignificant on the dark background although increasing text size works, but how many 20/20 vision people would think of doing that?

Very nice design.
