Creating a Password Protected Section in Website - 7/25/2007 22:16:24
Hi,

Not sure where to ask this question but will start here.

How do I add a password protected section to my OutFront hosted, FrontPage created website: My Website

I am not an expert in website matters (as a tour of my site will clearly demonstrate).

If I have landed in the wrong pew, please direct me to a more appropriate one.

Regards,
David

That's it (and very well written, I might add :) ). I'll give it a try and report back.

Thanks,
David

Problem - I tried to create the subweb but when I hit the "Convert to Web" I first get the standard warning but when I click "Yes" I get an MS FP box that says "Server Error: Cannot open ".htaccess"; no such file or folder"

And, of course, it gives me no further clue about what to do to solve the problem. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
David

You might want to look on the root of your server to see if that
quote:

.htaccess
file exists. Don't alter it, just look to see if it is present. FP uses that file.

Thanks for the response. I am not a computer whiz so I would appreciate some details. What is, and how do I look at, the root of my server? Then what?

David

You can easily create a subweb this way.
Create a new web on your computer. All you need is a home page saved on it. Then publish this new web to http://WhateverYourDomainNameIs.com/thenewsubwebname

You'll get a prompt saying you don't have a web with that name, do you want FP to create one. Say, "yes".

Once done you can continue with the explanation of how to set permissions.
