Database Issue - 7/30/2007 14:03:15
We are using Web Expressions and Visual Basic. We have uploaded our website. But now we get an error for the database side. Do you have any suggestions how to get it to work. We have contacted our server provider and we are set up for databases.

This is the error we are receiving:

Server Error in '/' Application.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. Could be lots of things...but the error suggests that your connection string is wrong (most likely), or, the database does not have remote connections established for its properties (less likely).
Post your connection string less the username and password information.

I'm having the same problem: my connection string is:
quote:

connectionString="Data Source=64.224.17.205;Initial Catalog=davidkahncom;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=******;Password=****

I have seen this problem numerous times with SQL Server Express / 2005. By default, the server does *not* allow SQL Client access remotely. You need to use the SQL Configuration Manager or SQL Surface Area Configuration to turn on the Remote Client Access.

If the web site and SQL Server are on the same machine / host, you should be able to use the connection string a little differently. Here's a .NET Connection string I use on a local connection:

(from web.config file)

<connectionStrings>
<add name="service_findersConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=TINMAN\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=service_finders;User ID=XXX;Password=XXX" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>
</connectionStrings>

If the web and database services are on the same box, this method might work without exposing the SQL Server to the 'outside'. Hope it helps.
