Default Word to start in Print Layout, not Reading Layout - 8/2/2007 11:39:36
I can't stand Word's "Reading Layout". Is there a way to get Word to default to opening a document in "Print Layout"? Thanks, Andrew

Andrew, open a new document and set view to print layout and close it. When you open a new document it should be in the last setting (print layout). ??? At least it works that way for me...

Hmmmm. I tried your suggestion and it seems to work from any document that I pull to my PC. But Word documents opened from within Outlook still open in the reading view. (If I drag the same document to my desktop and open it then it opens in print view.) Oh well, I'm closer to the mark. Thanks, Andrew

From MS Word Help... Note You can't set a default for all documents that you view in Word, because the view setting is stored with each individual document as a document property. You can save your document in the view with which you want it to open. Documents that you receive from others will open with the view in which they were previously saved. I HATE that layout too and every document I receive here at the office is setup that way. I've found that hitting the ESC key removes the read view and changes it to what you have set as your default. Swirl

If you are using Word 2003, go to Tools, then Options, then General, and untick "Allow starting in Reading Layout".

ORIGINAL: dworden If you are using Word 2003, go to Tools, then Options, then General, and untick "Allow starting in Reading Layout". Bingo! That's it! It says it right in the "help" tool, regarding Reading Layout,...quote:
Note When you open a Microsoft Word document that you have received as an e-mail attachment, Word automatically switches to reading layout view. If you don't want to use reading layout view for e-mail attachments, clear the Allow starting in Reading Layout check box on the General tab of the Options dialog box (Tools menu). I'm embarrassed that I didn't find it myself. But thank you dworden, your help is much appreciated, as well as everyone else's suggestions. Andrew
