create new site in expression web - 8/2/2007 14:35:31
I find I can't do the first thing with my new copy of Expression Web - like create a new website.
I'm running a single pc using XP Pro SP2 ( the SP2 reluctantly installed, along with a new version of the OS after a lightning strike took out the motherboard) and have set up IIS and FPSE2002. It may be the added security of SP2 which is giving me the prooblem, but I first got a message after instructing EW to set up a new website (not a new page) which said "the web server does not appear to have any authentication methods enabled". I found a previous similar problem on this site and used the suggested solution of switching to Integrated Windows Authentication instead of anonymous authentication. Which has cured that problem and given me another.
Now I get a logon window asking for user and password. I assume my user name is the same as my computer name, but as I haven't even created the darn site yet I don't know what password the server is expecting.
Is it something to do with server permissions, and if so, how do I access them please?
I never had this problem with FP, of which I've been an enthusiastic user for about 7 years. I'm beginning to think I should never have switched, but even FP isn't behaving under my new installation, so there's something fundamentally wrong here.
AND I see that Microsoft hasn't yet even got a category for Expression Web support on its website!!
Any suggestions welome.

Hi Maggie.
I don't know if this will help you, but here's my experience. Just this week I switched web hosting companies. On their end, there were some adjustments to be done to enable Front Page Server Extensions (which I had no idea needed to be enabled because I hadn't DISabled them on my old host when switching from FP to EW). So now I have a new username/PW combo that I designated and are different from the ones I was accustomed to use on the old host.
As far as setting up a new site in EW, I had no trouble creating a dummy. When I opened EW it automatically opened the sign in for my existing site but I just cancelled. File/New, select WebSite. Then I saved to my hard drive.
Perhaps if you call tech support at your host company they can assist you in checking if all your settings are OK>

Yes, that's exactly the case, Corey. Which, I repeat for the other kind people who made suggestions, is on my own PC where the only "host" is IIS.

Since you are using your own server locally, I am not certain if you need to set the permissions properly.
You might check out How to set up your first IIS Web site to see if that helps.
Can you create a new site in your C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Web Sites folder?

Yes, Corey, I can set up a disk-based website in C:\Documents and Settings etc. It's trying to set up a "proper" website that's giving me grief.
I checked out the article you recommended: it refers to IIS running on Windows Server 2003, so all the dialogue boxes are different from what I see on XP Pro.
I've currently removed FPSE 2002, so I'll see what difference that makes.

The login page that you mentioned will probably be asking for the password you use when you start up your machine, which makes sense when you consider that your ID is your machine name.

Caz, thank you! I've printed off pages from the sites you gave me, and will digest them slowly! But I must say, it seems from these that the answer is in the IIS area rather than Expression Web. I'll report back.

Well it comes does to do you need to have IIS running locally? Most people do not. If you must, it is something else that is going to need to be learned unfortunately.

Yes, I think that's the key question. I had assumed that, as I had a number of websites created in FP and using the server extensions, I was going to have to replicate that set-up in EW. And I often use HTML forms, which still need FPSE even in EW.
I'm now pushing a disk-based site as far as I can to see if all that's really needed. I have begun to set up a ASP NET form and think I can make it work, as long as I can understand where the data goes on submission! If I can make ASP NET work, then I'll simply uninstall IIS, as ASP NET uses its own server. Thank goodness!

OK, the razorX tutorials site showed me how test a simple asp file to prove that IIS is working. And after a re-install, it finally is! So I can write asp files in FrontPage and ASP.NET files in Expression Web, and I'm going forward with both these options. I am fully intending to ignore FPSE from now on, as they seem to create havoc if they don't install first time perfectly: it makes form creation a bit less simple at first but I'll get used to it.
