error 403 - 8/14/2007 1:35:30
I received this error when I tried to publish :
“403 Forbidden
Forbidden You don't have permission to access /_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.exe on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. Apache/1.3.37 Server at www.xxxxxxxxxx.com Port 80”
Any idea what the problem is and most important how to fix it?

Does your webhosting company have a control panel? If so, does the control panel have a FP icon on it so you can check Frontpage Server Extensions? If so, check FPSE.

If not, send the message to your webhosting company's support department

I just went through this. I couldn't get any help from the hosting techies and even got a friend with the new Microsoft Expression Web (replaced FrontPage) and he had the same problem. I was just about ready to switch over to Coffeecup (coffeecup.com) and remove all the extension-specific stuff out of all my pages, when I was thinking to try FrontPage's ftp publishing to see if it would work. That's when I stumbled on to the page where you select your server type. Apache wasn't selected. Selecting that got rid of the error message in publishing. You can find it at:
Tools > Page Options > Compatibility

That's also the page where you click whether or not you're designing for using the FP Extensions.

Fixing that (selecting Apache server) has worked for my being able to publish updates on two of my websites, and I'm praying that there won't be any more problems of that nature. I hope that fixes it for everyone else.
