Just a thought:

Google etc seem to like sites where the content is changed fairly regularly.

So, if you've got a client who (as many are) isn't terribly interested in updating their site regularly - how about having say 3 different versions of your home page content and rotating them on a monthly basis using PHP or whatever?

I've just done this on a site but I'm interested in what people think.

Another flaw in the great google system AFAICS. Constant change is not necessarily an indicator of a site's relevance. Some site pages eg product information will never need updating but will stay 100% relevant. So why play games with rotating different forms of the same content? I wouldn't bother, and hopefully if nobody plays the game then eventually google will realise the flaw in their logic.

It's a good way to help your site stand out - especially if the competition doesn't bother to update often. Just be careful so that the updates don't change the meaning of the page. I know of sites that rank very well in competitive industries that only change the drop down form values on a regularly random (does that make sense?) schedule. What you're after is to change the checksum value of the page so that 1) Google knows something has changed and 2) Google quickly re-visits your page/site.

A constantly updated/changed page doesn't directly indicate relevance, but it does show that the site is active and may have fresh/recent content that is of value or newsworthy.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I'll monitor the situation and report back.
