Wireless Network Card replacement - 9/1/2007 8:40:09
Hi all

I need your words of wisdom please (or at least gibberish that sounds good!).

As I've mentioned over the last couple of years, I've got a PC laptop who's network card has never seemed to really work very well. It drops offline frequently for no apparent reason.

I've fiddled with drivers - updating them, rolling them back etc etc.

I've fiddled with the setup - using windows to control it, using the manufacturers own control systems.

I've ruled out the router as the ibook works like a dream and never drops offline.

I've ruled out the firewall and anti-virus as an issue.

I've ruled out fridges/cookers/RSJs etc as interference problems as it does it while right next to the router.

Basically the thing just doesn't get used much because it's a pain in particular when the ibook never ever drops offline - it's not much of a choice!

Now though, I would actually like to get the thing working again and I'm thinking about just replacing the network card outright.

Does anyone have any recommendations about replacement network cards or which brands to avoid etc?

Thank you for your attention.

My laptop has a habit of dropping out - I just put up with it and let windows cope with reconnecting. :)

I would take a look at the specs and find out if it's onboard wifi... there's a good chance it's built in and not really replacable. You'd need to simply disable it and get yourself a PCMCIA card you can slip into the slot... or a USB adapter.

Thanks bobby (good to see you back!) - I think that's exactly what I'll do.
