Peppergal -> RSS Confusion (9/4/2007 12:13:06)

I am trying to put two things on my website: a link thingee for people so sign up for an RSS feed, so that they will be alerted when my site is updated.

I also want to put an email subscription form for the same thing. How do I do this, beyond the totally archaic Front Page form that will have someone give me their email and then I add them to a mass mailing list and send them stuff when I add new content to the website...I want something automatic, and of course, like all REALTORS, free or cheap is good!

I need to know how to do this and I've tried hunting down info but most of what I've found is why RSS feeds are important, not really been able to find the nuts and bolts of how to do it.

Also - do I have to manually alert whatever RSS feed thing I subscribe to or join? I had signed up for an RSS feed for my blog last spring and evidently it doesn't automatically update - it says the blog was last updated 123 days ago and I've written at least 60 or 70 blogs since then!

I'm SO confused!!! I feel stupid and very very old, and slightly ADD.

For the email subscription you could use

PHPlist

I use it and it works great.

Usually the RSS feed is generated when the DB is updated. I know that is how it is with my blog. Once I hit submit, it also goes over to rss.asp which generates the rss.xml file.

What blog software are you using? It should update when you add a new blog

jurgen - thanks, but I am not looking for a newsletter sign up, but just an option for visitors to be alerted when the site is updated.

coreybryant - see, I thought that mybloglog.com would automatically update my bloglog profile when I publish new content to my blog

http://www.activerain.com/blogs/karen_rice

It hasn't, though it has updated others - I placed the blog log widget in the sidebar of my blog like others have. When viewing my profile it shows that it hasn't been updated in nearly six months! When it has!

But I want the RSS feed on certain pages of my website too.

Here are some tools that I use. They might help in this case.

http://www.feedburner.com
allows you to generate rss and email subscribe buttons and allows you to track results.

http://www.springwidgets.com
allows you to display feeds on any web page or on your computer desktop.

Do yo have a time in the RSS feed to update?

DebSpecs -> RSS on web store (9/14/2007 16:11:41)

Can you have an RSS on a regular website (not a blog). A lot of our customers are interested in receiving emails when our site is updated with new products. I'm wondering if we can enable them to get and RSS feed. Thanks.

I tried to start using www.feedburner.com but it seems that I need to have published the feed in some way first. I need to identify the feed on commencement. Is that correct?

Feedburner is a plugin for your feed. It's not the actual feed. You can create a feed with software like http://www.feedforall.com, or you can use a blog. The latter is much more a much more common approach.

Thanks a lot Thomas. Now I follow. I'll give it a go.
