I am hosting my own domain on a WindowsXP Professional machine. I have no problem connecting to the FTP site using various FTP clients. However, when I attempt to publish to the domain, I am prompted for a user ID and password. I am also prompted for userID/pass just trying to open the site (for example - File, Open web, web_name: http://mydomain.com.

If I try to use an admin user on the local box I cannot login. I added an admin user under the Security tab of the wwwroot folder properties giving it full control but the same occurs. Where am I supposed to setup/modify user account and permissions to allow me to authenticate when opening or publishing to my locally hosted domain?

I have searched the forums but I don't think I am using the correct terminology. Thanks in advance for any help.

Does no one have any response? Perhaps I am not explaining correctly.

I am hosting my domain on my own server, however, I am unsure how to publish to the domain.

Patrick, I assume you have IIS installed on your XP Pro machine? (Installing IIS) If so have you installed the FP Server Extensions and which version?
Also, if I remember correctly you'll need to create your user account using the Server Extension Administrator in the IIS console. It's been a while so don't hold me to it though.

Hello, Mike, and thank you for your reply.

I have IIS v5.1 installed. I am unclear about how to create the user account through the Server Extensions Admin (I see where I can create a new web). Please forgive my ignorance. Previously I used FrontPage on sites hosted by others so I am a novice to this.

When you are in IIS, you should be able to right click on the domain and choose properties. Now in that dialog box, choose Frontpage Server Extensions

Thanks for your help.

I can access Front Page Server Extensions from within Administrative Tools. In the Console (Console Root if you will), I see the name of my machine as a folder under which I see /LM/W3SVC/1:

From within IIS, I see my machine name labled (local computer) below which I see 'Web Sites', 'FTP Sites', and 'Default SMTP Virtual Server'. In the 'Default Web Site Properties' dialog, I see a tab for Server Extensions, however I do not see where to add the user account Mike refers to nor do I see how this will allow me to publish locally.

I have only one web site - the 'Default Web site'. When I click on properties for that the 'Default Web site Properties' dialog opens and there are 9 tabs, one of which is 'Server Extensions'. I have included a screenshot:

So it would be Server Extensions. There you should be able to extend the website

I don't understand what you mean when you say "extend the website" nor do I see how to do so under the Server Extensions tab.

What is under the Extensions Tab? Extending the website is sort of what MS calls it on the website.

See if Configuring FrontPage Server Extensions might help you. I only used Windows 2003 servers unfortunately and Microsoft really changed the IIS GUI

Thanks for your response, Corey.

I found where I can right click on 'Default Web Site' and then drill down to 'New' and choose 'Server Extensions Web'.

I created a new directory called 'home'. However, when I try to publish to C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\home I get an error window that says 'The folder "C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\home" is contained by a server-based Web. To access this Web you must use the http://url for the web server.' When I try to use http://mydomain.com/ or http://mydomain.com/home it gives another error window that says "Unable to open 'http://mydomain.com/home'. Server error: Possible causes ...

  • The web server may not have the FrontPage Server Extensions installed (It does according to what that site you referenced says)
  • The web server may be temprorarily out of service.
  • If you are connecting through a proxy server, the proroxy settings may be incorrect.
  • An error may have occurred in the web server.


The third possibility got me to thinking that my router may be blocking the port FrontPage is using to connect through. What port does FrontPage use?

Yes, I can open the index page by going to File, open, http://mydomain.com.

Then try going to server - tools - and you should be able to access the "Frontpage Server Admin control panel" to possibly help with the installation

When I open http://mydomain.com in FrontPage and then go to Tools, Server is greyed out.

Usually that means that you are not connected to the server for some reason. What happens if you try http://www.example.com?

'Server' is still greyed out under the Tools tab.

You might try to actually uninstall the FPSE and re-install them. If you have the install program & not the one that came integrated with IIS, that would be even better.
