To be perfectly honest, though if you browse your local bookshop for books on SEO (search engine optimisation) or stick SEO in a search engine, you'll find loads of stuff on what to do and what not to do, no-one can tell you how to describe your business. If you don't have a clear idea of what you do that can be summed up in a few sentences, what hope do the rest of the world have? That said, when you're putting together a page about your business you need to think about the words that your customers will associate with your business - the sort of words you'd expect them to use in a search engine if they were trying to find your site. It's no use though just putting a load of likely looking words on a page, something known as keyword stuffing - they need to be worked into the text in a natural way (some sites though have a habit of putting a load of keywords at the bottom of a page as search engine fodder, though this tends to be frowned on these days, and is more likely to get them penalised by the search engines). The other thing to remember is that usually search engines don't crawl the whole page, and will often only index the first few hundred words, so you need to make sure the words and phrases that you want the search engines to pick up are close to the beginning of the page. Again though, if your keyword density's too great, you could again get penalised by the search engines. It's a fine balancing act. Writing for the web's an art-form in itself, and I'm sure someone may be able to point you in the direction of some specific resources (I can't think of any off the top of my head - my eyes aren't fully open yet at this time on a Saturday morning [;)]), but say you were a company selling widgets, you might use something like this: quote:
Company Name, based in Anytown, has been serving both the general public and trade in the Countyside area with their top quality widgets since 1991. We offer both our own brand, custom made widgets, as well as quality widgets from brands such as Brand A, Brand B and Brand C. We pride ourself on our high level of customer service - to Company Name, you, the customer comes first. We'll price match any widget you can find, on a competitor's website, or on the high street. You can buy from us online here on our website, or from our warehouse and showroom in Anytown. Company Name is your one stop shop for top quality widgets from all the big names. In just that one paragraph you've got the name of the company, where it's based, both the specific locality and the general area, what you sell, and the brands you sell. From there you can go on to describe in more detail about the company and it's products, or the history of the company, more about your customer service, whatever - but you've already got what are probably going to be important keywords for your business in there early.
