Are there any security concerns if I set up PHP, MySQL and Apache on my home computer, using that computer as a server?

Background to question:

1. I'm new to such things.

2. I've tried to install My SQL first but I'm stuck because I don't know how to open (if that's the right word) port 3306. But even if I can open this port, I'm wondering if I might be allowing baddies access to my computer somehow.

3. I do use a firewall and I have tried to set a 'strong' password for MySQL.

4. My main purpose in doing these setups is to better handle forms and form validations. I may not be launching into MySQL for a while; mainly PHP I suspect.

Thanks for considering my question.

Bypassing your question entirely... By far the easiest way (and by easiest I mean that you retain some hair that's not grey) is to use a packaged apache/php/mysql install-thingy like WAMP 5 - http://www.wampserver.com/en/index.php

I remember trying to set it up individually and it's a big pain in the you-know-where. With luck, if I remember rightly, it does it all for you.

Thanks for the useful tip Tailslide for preserving my locks a little longer! Site looks useful. Will probably give it a go, though do worry in case I somehow make it easier for my computer to be accessed by trouble-makers, if it's to be a server.
