Keeps crashing when I try to import a gif - 9/24/2007 5:04:43
Hi, I'm trying to edit a website using Frontpage, but every time I try and import a gif file it crashes and says an error has occured. I often haven't even selected the gif file, but as soon as I open the folder in which it is, the programme crashes. I've tried several different gif files but the same problem always occurs, but the package is happy to open jpeg in other folders. Have tried restarting Frontpage and windows, but same problem still occurs. I've looked for corrupted registry and metadata files (as it told me to on a website I found!) but I can't find any corrupt files. I've tried several times now (constantly restarting both Frontpage and my laptop) and once/twice I've got it to very occasionally import my gif image but it just appears as a white box with a red cross in it! Most of the time however, it crashes before I even try to select the file to import. I'm running Frontpage using Windows Parallels on my macbook pro if that makes any difference and have never had any other problems with it at all, although I haven't tried to import a gif before. Thanks

have you tried copying the gif (not through FP) onto you desktop and then importing from there? can you attach the gif to a post so we can see that is corrupt? can you save a gif from the net into that particular folder and then import it into frontpage, then you might be able to tell whether it is something wrong with the gif, the folder contents (maybe something else in the folder), or then something, er, else ;)

Have you tried simply dragging the gif file from it's folder on your HD to the folder within your FP site rather than "importing" it? I think you are running into memory (or lack of it) problems, so Mike's method should work although the path statement still has to be completed so FrontPage positions the image on the site page correctly by: >>Insert >>Picture >>From File.

Hi everyone thanks for your help and welcome - I think I've tried everything you've suggested with no luck! To summarise: 1. I tried saving it on to my desktop and then importing it - but the same problem still occurred. 2. I successfully saved another gif image off the internet and that imported fine 3. I've tried saving the gif image within the My Web folder and then inserting it but Frontpage didn't even come up with an error this time, it just bombed straight out back to my desktop. Tried this several time but same thing always happens. Unfortunately, I can't upload the image on to here as I'm too new on the site (need to have at least 30posts before it lets me upload anything). The gif file was created on the mac programme ArtText and is basically just some artistic text that has been saved as a gif file (with transparency included). The file size isn't that big either - it's only 36KB. I've tried saving the file as a gif but without including transparency, but although that did insert into Frontpage it appeared as a white box with a red cross in it! Any more ideas? Thanks ever so much for all your help so far!

after you save it to your desktop, change the file's name. then try to import.

Hi all Yep I did try what Mike suggested - I saved the gif file within My Web folder and then tried to import it, but it still didn't work. I've just tried saving it on my desktop and renaming it (I can't directly save it to my desktop because I create the gif on my Mac OS X and have to save it within my shared files so I can access it from Windows, but then I dragged it on to my windows dekstop, renamed it and tried to import it. It didn't crash but it appeared as a white box with a red cross in it! Arghh this is so frustrating! I don't know why it doesn't work!

it's puzzling: try downloading this re-exported version from here http://pp.kpnet.fi/prescott/stuff/hoofbeat_new.gif and save it while your in Windows Parallels and see if that makes any difference ...

http://pp.kpnet.fi/prescott/stuff/hoofbeat_new.gif Thanks - that works fine! It's obviously something to do with moving it from my Mac OS X to my Windows, but that's really odd as I move files between the two operating systems all the time without any problems. Thanks for your help EDIT: The only problem with doing it via the internet is it seems to have lost it's transparency (I originally saved it as a gif including transparency, which unless I'm being really stupid, should mean it has a transparent background and only the actual letters would be present). Oh well, I'll just have to use Photoshop to cut the letters out now.

RE: Keeps crashing when I try to import a gif - 9/25/2007 14:51:37
Hi I'm back again! Thanks to d a v e's help, I've sorted out the gif problem. However, I'm now trying to delete a table that I had been trying to place the image in originally, but whenever I highlight any of the cells, frontpage just closes down. It doesnt say it has a problem, it just suddenly closes and I'm left staring at the desktop. Since this was the table that I'd originally been trying to put the graphic in, I'm a bit suspicious. Is it possible I have a corruption somewhere? Should I reinstall frontpage, or just make a back up of my website and call it something else? Thanks EDIT: I've got around the crashing problem, by just editing the HTML directly rather than trying to highlight the cells, but would like to know if anyone has any ideas why this might have been happening to begin with so I can make sure it doesn't happen again.
