halinagold -> Changing a FP site into a DW site (9/25/2007 1:35:50)

I've been getting to know DW and CSS for a while now and ended up creating a Danish website that looks pretty cool compared to the similar English site I've made in FP and without CSS.
So now I want to take that English site and use the same template and CSS as in the Danish.
Do you have any advice for me - things to avoid or be aware of?

Can I, to begin with, simply open my FP site in DW and then start changing things? I don't use any FP templates or extensions.

The thing I'm pondering a bit is this:parts of the FP site has really good placement in Google, so I wonder how to go about it without messing with that. Clearly my file names will change from .htm to .html so if I keep the old ones and also upload the new ones it will be duplicate content. So I'm thinking of using the robots.txt to tell Google (and others) that they should no longer index the .htm files and that will make them shift naturally to the new .html files. Is that the way?

Thanks!

if you define your site in dreamweaver (check the help files with the F1 key) then and browse to the home page (usually index.htm or similar) and define it as the site root then dw should handle everything else for you - and you can keep the .htm extensions

Wow, that's great news, it means I can change one file at a time without SE placements being affected. Thanks!

am less lucky with the same task of changing an FP site to a DW site.

I deleted the FP index page amd replaced it with the DW index page. DW index page is not finding the CSS or the images.

I tried turning off FP extensions on the server. That did not help.

Solutions?

Thanks
Jerry
