shirleyscrystal -> fix for Outlook Express 6? (9/28/2007 1:45:27)

My OE is doing 2 different things, one I've lived with for awhile and another that is recent that is troubling.

The troubling one was 2 days ago when I open my OE inbox some of the emails didn't have any content & it says it can't be viewed or something like that. I have 6 different identities & the first time this happened it did it on 2 of the identities but not the rest even though my dsl was working fine. When closing OE & going back in I could see the emails contents but it eliminated about 2 months worth of emails. This happened everytime I closed & then opened it & it would loose a few more months. I waited about an hour & then it was working fine. No idea why. Today was the 2nd time this happened except this time all of the emails in the inbox were gone; From, Subject,
Received, & content all gone in all of my identities. I closed it & reopened & still nothing but on the next try closing & opening they were all back. In both cases my folders were not affected. It is alittle troubling.

The 2nd thing it's doing that it has been doing for atleast 4 mo, is that on my main identity it always tells me that it is receiving 1 or more messages & then I get this error message:
Message number 5 could not be retrieved. Account: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Server: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR problem retrieving message.', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800420CD

I have tested this by going to the website of my server & checking the emails & sending tests & checking & it appears that it's confused. When it says it's sending one message it never does & give me the error message & in reality there is no message coming. If I send myself a test & tells me that it's sending 2 messages, I get the test & then the error message that says it couldn't send the other one when there was really only one message in the first place. I've just been hitting enter & hiding the error message & ignoring it.

I'm now wondering if the 2 problems are related. Is there a fix for OE 6 that won't affect my emails? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you,
Shirley

Might not be related but I came across something similar sounding a while back when a client was getting similar messages about messages being downloaded that never arrived. Turned out to be a very large message jamming up the works. I went into her webmail account and deleted it there and everything started flowing through to the Outlook account again normally. So if you have a webmail account associated with the email address (and most do) then see if you can get in and check there. Or if you're diverting from yahoo or gmails or something - check there's no large messages causing issues there.

Might not be the answer but worth a quick look!

Hi Tailslide,
I did what you suggested & went to the website of my server & sorted the emails to find the largest & deleted about 30 of the biggest ones & now the error message is gone! [:)] WOW, I'm really surprised that could have been the reason, but the error message is gone, atleast for now anyway.

One thing I hadn't considered is that I've got 7,000 emails on that website. I actually have more than that in my OE but I hadn't thought about having to delete anything on the website before. I've double checked & it looks like I can delete emails from the website without anything in my OE being deleted so I'm considering doing that, but not today, I'll wait awhile to see if it's ok or necessary.

Thank you, Shirley

Something you might want to check, and you'll forgive me if I don't remember the exact steps as there are so many different versions of Outlook that I get lost - Go into Outlook and go to Tools. Click on Accounts and select the email account you have issues with. Then click on Properties. Now somewhere in there you should see an Advanced option or tab. Click on that and on that page somewhere you should see a tick box for "leave message on server" tick that and a couple of other options should light up. Tick the "Remove from server when deleted from Deleted Items" tickbox and then click Apply.

That should also help reduce any clogs.

Hi again Tailslide,
I made those changes in the account properties you suggested. Thank you for the information, it's much appreciated. I'm hoping that the first problem is also solved with these corrections, if not then I'll have to look further for a solution, so in that case I'll be back.
Thank you,
Shirley

Ok, it did it again. I was moving an email to a folder when OE gave me an error message telling me it couldn't complete it. I tried a few times with same results & then noticed that OE had eliminated about 5 mo of emails. Going out & then back in was the same so I went to the servers website & one of the emails I received today was bigger than the norm. I deleted it & then when I went back in to OE it was normal again. I didn't have this problem ever before & now it seems a large email will jam up the works. Doesn't this mean that there is something wrong with OE? Why all of a sudden it is acting up this way? Is there anything I can do to correct the problem that I haven't already done?

If you have "tons" of emails you might want to check the size of your .pst file. You may want to archive your email folder if you don't do so on a regular basis. You could split your folder and create a new one to make room for the next "tons" of email...... [:)]

shirleyscrystal -> RE: fix for Outlook Express 6? (9/29/2007 18:15:44)

I was just going to add to my previous post that I can't read any of the email, the error message says it 'can't be displayed'. I saw your post, jurgen, & went back to check to see I if I received an email that you posted & OE is back to the 5 eliminated months so if I did receive an email, I wouldn't see it. Checking with the server's site the largest email is 66KB & it's still doing it.

Where would I find the .pst file? I did a search for it & it says that it is 265KB, is that big enough, can I change it? I tried going to it but it can't be opened. Also I don't know exactly what archive means in computer terms. I do get tons of emails & I have many folders, most of which aren't that full. The bulk of my email is my inbox that I just can't keep up with deleting the ones I don't need anymore.

I just tried deleting some of them & I guess because it still says it can't display the messages & the newest ones are from Feb 07, I can't delete any of them. I have been getting lots of spam recently, don't know why, could that affect it? I checked my other identities and they are all fine, it just my main identity that is affected with this problem. I just closed OE & then reopened it, which I've done already many times, but now it's back to normal. How do I archive my folders? Any & all help is appreciated, Shirley

It's not the "largest" emai, it's waht you are having in the folder...

265kb is not much, you should be fine there....

Archiving is kinda compacting. Go to >file >folder >compact or compact all folders....

Absolutely... You should look into spam checking with your server. It looks like all your email is forwarded to your outlook. Make sure it will be deleted from the server once you have it. Clean up your emails and only keep what you absolutely need .... the rest goes in the dumpster.....

Email can fill you up very fast, certainly when you are getting a lot of spam. I guess the spam email is coming of your website. You need to look into NOT giving them spam bots your real email address....

I'm not sure I understand this, what would be in the folder that would cause it, do you mean how much is in the folder?

My main identity compacts all the time, it's annoying.

I've started getting the spam recently since switching to att yahoo dsl but I'm not getting it on all of my identities. I don't have it on my website email but I have it on my main identity, & another identity that I don't use very often that used to be used for a jewelry mall I was in for about 5 mo. I barely use it now but I get alot of spam there, it doesn't make sense. I aways block the spam & it has slowed down but not gone.

I changed the setting like Tailslide suggested:

Click on that and on that page somewhere you should see a tick box for "leave message on server" tick that and a couple of other options should light up. Is there anything else that I should do? I will work on deleting things I don't need, I always worry that I might need it later so I have lots of folders. I guess I should clean it up. Thank you for your help, Shirley
