ORIGINAL: coreybryant WinZip might be able to - but I use WinRar www.rarlab.com I was looking for something that is free. A user that I am helping sent me some files in .rar, don't think I want to pay anything just to help him. Its okay. I'll just tell him to send me in a file format that I can open. Thanks

If you're still looking this should do it for you, for free: http://www.7-zip.org/

As far as free .rar opening software goes (which I'm all for), just be careful to be sure that the software has the features you want. Rar uses advanced features like encryption. Some free programs may not support those features or be able to do anything more than open the file. If you want to create .rar files or use all of the RAR format's features, WinRar is worth the price. If not, go with a freebie. If anyone's interested, one of our writers discussed this in greater detail here:Opening RAR Files Also, trial versions are good for one-time Rar opening needs, but if you use RAR a lot, I would spring for a good, full featured program.

I installed WinRar a long time ago, it keeps telling me to upgrade, but doesn't actually require me to upgrade. I just have to click the button to close the window.. not sure if it is still like that or not. WinRar is very common, especially among the development type people. 7-zip isn't quite as common, so if you use that, make sure you create zip or rar files instead of the 7zip files.
