Frontpage Navigation and Link Bar issues-please help - 10/3/2007 8:09:48
I am desperately seeking help and new to this forum. I have a busy retail website that uses Frontpage, and has it's share of bugs leaving me at wit's end. Yesterday for some reason my link bars at the top of some of my pages began disappearing, when I was not even publishing those pages-just others. Now the link bars on most of my pages are gone, making it difficult for customers to navigate the site. It all looks fine on my computer, I see them all. I have checked the navigation and the hyperlinks and see no problems. Can anyone help?

I can see the top links on your pages. Which pages are not working?

If you go into the Boutique, and then click on some of the categories- ie: Holiday, Lighting, etc...........
Also, I have my Blog in the link bar and the navigation and it's not showing up? Thank you!

Did you remember to add those pages inside Navigation view.

You need to switch to Navigation view and drag the page into the tree/structure.

Yes, I already did that......and it looks fine on my end, so weird! This is not the first time it has happened and it's very random. I am stummped, as I tried taking them out of the navigation and then putting them back in and saving changes, which didn't work

Try a simple Recalculate Hyperlinks on your web at the server.

How do I do that? Should I back up the site first?

Do these first and see if it works.

Make sure the pages you added in the Navigation view are selected to be included in the link bar. They should not look gray or 'disabled' inside Navigation view.

Then recalculate hyperlinks in your local FP web. This command is in the Tools in menu.

You have to publish to your server, no FTP.

See if these help.

Unfortunately it did nothing. Do you have any other suggestions? It's very odd, but while the pages are in the process of publishing and I look at the remote website, the link bar is correct on each page. As soon as it's finished publishing, and I refresh the remote pages, they have dissapeared!

Did you have any change in your routine work, for example upgrade Frontpage or change host?

Now lets try something different. We will work on a test web so it won't affect the main web.

Publish your web to a subweb by publishing to http://www.shabbyfufu.com/test

Then in Frontpage you Open Web and open this web, type http://www.shabbyfufu.com/test

When inside, you check if the Boutique pages are as what you want in Navigation.
Then Recalculate Hyperlink this web.

If after you had posted to http://www.shabbyfufu.com/test then yes it is viewable from the internet if the person knows the URL.

I guess that it can be removed later? As you can see if you look now, the link bars do appear to be correct for the time being

Yes it can be removed. You should make a practice of publishing to a Test site before putting it live on a production site. This way if things don't turn up right, you won't mess up the production due to an inadvertent error or the likes.

So, the link bar is there now? How will it disappear?

When I was publishing for the last couple of days, the linkbars would dissapear from any page that I made changes to towards the end of the publishing routine. I would see them on the remote site while publishing, but once the site finishing publishing and I refreshed the remote page, they were gone! If you look at the test, it looks correct so far.....will see when it's finished how it looks.

So if it looks good at the end of the test, do I reverse publish from the test to local? Would that change the hyperlinks and navigation structure on the local end?

No, don't reverse publish. Always keep the local copy as the Master because you have better control of the local copy then you have on the server copy.

In a situation where your PC/harddisk fail and you lost the local files, then you can reverse publish the server copy to your new PC/harddisk.

Now if you are comfortable working live on the server, you can try solve your problem with a Recalculate Hyperlink on the main web.

I don't really know what the problem is. Is it a FP issue or the hosting company, I don't know.

This test is to guide you that Recalculating Hyperlink 'LIVE' on the server may solve your broken link in the Boutique pages.

You have disabled Right-click. Maybe you would like to consider the rightclick menu I put up on my site at
http://www.berithbpc.com

If things are ok at the test web, then in FP you Open Web, type http://www.shabbyfufu.com

and do a Recalculate Hyperlink, see if the broken links can be mended.

I don't really think that it's the right click giving it an issue......although I know that with Firefox I can right click into my site myself. The site was written in 2004, so alot has changed since then. I am seriously considering having it rewritten in an easier to use format. My old web designer doesn't use Frontpage anymore......www.cottagecollections.com

Since I have so many graphics, it says that it will take 2 hrs to publish the site left.

No, I am not saying righclick is the issue. I am thinking in view of this broken hyperlink( which we don't know what the cause is) you may like to consider turning the rightclick disable into something useful like a rightclick navigation menu.

Oh.....I see. That might be a good idea if I can't get the linkbar issue straightened out. So then I would need to remove the No Right Click from all of my pages as it exisists? How would I code it the way that you have on your site?
