I have a customer who wants to use paypal to allow his customers to pay their bills with a credit card. I noticed paypal allows you to send an invoice via e-mail and then the customer can pay online. I have never used this option so I want to make sure it does what we need it to do.

Can the customer still pay online if he sends the invoice via snailmail?

Can the customer enter a specific dollar amount? For example, pay only part of the bill.

Any other information you can give me is much appreciated.

You might want to email Paypal or maybe check out a forum where a lot of Paypal Users hang out: www.paypaldev.org

Tom gave me a good suggestion. Put the url of a page on the invoice and use the “buy” button to allow them to pay online.

Once you sign into your paypal account, you can "invoice" the customer. They will receive the invoice via their email. The email will contain a link which they click to sign into their paypal account, and, hopefully, pay. I don't know if they can pay partially or not. I hope this was useful. :)

Also, you can test it out by charging $0.01 just to see what everything looks like. You can also have someone else with a paypal account, test it out with a real payment, and then refund that person once you are done.

PayPal also has a sandbox area where you can set up a test buyers and sellers accounts, to try things out: https://developer.paypal.com/
