time-of-day relevant site - 10/8/2007 12:51:23
you've all seen sites with headers and themes that reflect say the seasons - but how about one that changes according the time of day (for the viewer of course? for example a winter theme starts off white and bright and towards late afternoon gets bluer and then darker and starry. i don't mean quite in real-time but loading the next style sheet in the sequence in e.g. 2 hour intervals.

you know what it's like when you view a white background site at night time with low lighting levels - too bright!!! and vice versa in the daytime when you have a different site with a black/dark background that looks a bit out of place in a sunny room.

wouldn't it be cool. well it would if i knew how to do it :)

You would have to use Javascript to change the style sheets so that the visitors time is used not the server time, otherwise the effect could be reversed.

I'm sure there must be a script available somewhere. Have you tried googling?

I found this one http://tinyurl.com/39pqmc

Got some time on your hands dave? :) Would be cool and you could probably do it with just 1 JavaScript. It would run all the time with intervals but you could do it all with 1 JS.

Now add a little AJAX and make it do something useful. :) :) :)

Ah I did this when my website first went live - I had the blue sky thing for the daytime and a lovely dark sky and moon (no comments please) for the night time - had it on a script that swapped the images depending on the time of day. Unfortunately the script has gone bye-bye a while back as I cleared out all the dead files in that folder.

Dave - if you check out some of the online js tutorials that talk about js dates and times, that'll probably get you started. I seem to remember seeing one a while back that gave a simple example of how it could be done (trouble is I can't remember which though!) I used to have a basic example somewhere I did for a course once. I'll have a root around and see if I can dig it out.

Ah! A quick look in the folder where my scripts for that particular course should be confirms I've filed them under something else (no idea what! :)), but, I have just found this!

Time Sensitive CSS switcher that also allows you to use a default stylesheet for them pesky folks with js switched off :) - IIRC it's pretty similar to the one that Tail used to use (used to have a copy of that too somewhere, but, yep...you guessed it! Can't remember where I filed that one either! :))

You know what I think is better? I'd go for a seasonal thing rather than a time of day thing. You could have a little woolly hat on the Gecko in winter and sunglasses in Summer!! I've got a PHP script which will include content depending on the month - you could easily adapt that. (seriously - not just saying that!).
